Very nice but I thought the Marauder was first born in '62/'63?

That's pretty cool, but it wouldn't have fit your '64, unless you'd swapped a 430 into it.
The MEL series engines are very different than the FE engine your '64 would have come
with, and no parts interchange between the two series.

Thats just it......... the engine bay was empty, I never made up my mind what motor to put in it, and sold it before I got that far

Krytin, you are partially right. What you are refering to is the Marauder as an optional package. Before that, the Marauder designation was used for the top engine options. There was the Marauder engine, and the Super Marauder engine.
Unfortunately, I don't know enough about these engines / options. Maybe someone else can explain it better.

I follow what you're saying - now that you mention it I do remember seeing/reading about the Marauder engine options that were available on early Mercury models. Thanks for the reminder!

Mercury started using the Marauder name in 1958. Some (not all) of the engines they put the name on can be seen here.

1958 "Marauder 383" 4V - 330 hp
1958 "Super Marauder" 430 6V - 400 hp (highest hp in any 1958 car)
1960 "Marauder 430" 2V - 310 hp
1962 "Marauder" 406 4V - 385 hp
1962 "Marauder 406" 6V - 405 hp
