Read your owners manual.. You need a compatible system, but works with most.

Page 68-71. You may have to try several times to get it to work, but it will work.

I did it last week... You have to have ( homelink) in your door opener. Use the remote that will open the door. Press program button on opener then hold down one of the buttons in the console.

I had to get the car close to the garage door before it would "take".

I can't get mine to work no matter how many times I tried. I gave up.

You need to take a look at your garage door opener manual. Mine is only a few years old. I had to have a ladder under the opener in order to put it in "program" mode then jump down and get into the car real quick to do the other part before the opener went back out of programming mode. Took me three or four tries, but I was being carefull not to splat on the garage floor in my haste.

This is true with 'code hopping' remotes.

Pretty easy to do, took one shot. Just make sure your car isn't in the way of the garage door when you do this ;)

As said before everyone is correct. The basic idea is
1. you have to program the homelink button in the car first, with the remote opener that came with your garage door.
2. you have to than sync your homelink in the car with the opener on the ceiling.
Read the manual and follow the steps on which buttons to press when. Have a beer or two first.

How old is your opener? Mine was from the mid eighties and the transmitting frequency is completely different from the newer openers (I'm guessing 27mhz vs. 300mhz for the newer types). The newer openers operate similar to your key fob with 'code hopping' vs a 10-bit dip switch code. I havn't tried yet, but you might be able to upgrade your old opener with a kit available from Home Despot or similar place...
