View Full Version : Do those Exhaust Tips Rot Out? Noise's when driving....

I'm getting this sound like you'd get when you were a kid and you'd put cards in a bike spokes and drive fast. The sound for me is only under exceleration.
Yeah I know it sure sounds like something bad sometimes, but I have oil and I can't get the sound to reproduce parked and I doubt it's motor, the car still drives like a beast. It's usually, when going in slower speeds. A passenger said it sounded like it wasn't comming from the front, it sounded like it was comming from the rear, so I thought it may be a rattle in the exhaust.
I'm running a stage 2 Rhienart block 2 cat system installed by the dealer 20k ago and the cat back is stock, so I'm wondering if this is anything anyone has heard or had something similar.
I had to replace my 4:10 gears last year but that was a very different sound, that was a whinning, this is a clicking/tapping noise..............any thoughts?
Thanks for any help, Rob.
Might be a blown gasket between the passenger manifold and mating pipe.
There is no gasket on the drivers side.
Might also be a bad cat that has blown out.

A blown cat will tap and tick like that? It's only under power, drive engaged when I put it in neutral and give it gas, it doesn't sound.
Uggg, that shouldn't happen in less then 20k miles? I wonder if Dennis warrantees those cat's. Honestly, I never loved that system from the day I got it, but there wasn't anything else out there then other then Kooks and I didn't want it to sound like my Mustang.
I've been thinking about replacing the exhaust from the block all the way back. But I just got a new project: a 71 Chevelle SS that's legit and I don't have a few grand to drop now....................uggg.
While I'd like headers and flowmasters, I know it'd drive me crazy in that car and besides I don't want anything throatier then I now have,

Tips are stainless steel, and if you keep then clean, should provide years of service to come. I agree with Zack, you have an exhaust leak of sorts. Maybe the noise goes away when the engine is warm? Metal expands and 'fixes' the leak temporarily.....

I realize the outside of the tips are SS, I didn't know if there was something on the inside that wasn't, that could rot or dislodge.
Ok there could be, the dealer did the work and put the x pipe together, so it could be. But I've never heard the sound fi itself, it's always there at lower speeds. If I'm going balls out on the highway and then I get off, I'll hear it again at lower speeds.
It's more annoying then anything else, so far........

Get a couple of friends with rags to cover both exhaust tips while idling and listen for the leak(s) as the system pressurizes!!

I have had the welds at where the tip / rear pipe connect break apart and leak on mine regularly. Atleast once a year I am reconnecting something under there,
The tip however should last a looooonnnnggg time.;)

Maybe... a Tack in the tire...it will make a tapping sound at low speeds...and disappear at higher speeds...
Just a thought...

Ok, I could try that, but since I said it only happens as I'm driving slow, if they're really, really good friends maybe they'll run along side of the car holding rags on the tips too, lol. :D

I have a nice system in the car, but when I listen to the Nav unit, I can hear the ****............this damn chevelle is going to keep me from getting a new exhaust system for this car, grrrrrrrrrr
Well I'll at least take it to a muffler shop to see if they can get any sounds out of it, or like the running along side the car thing?

I'm kinda there too, but I think the most plausable is the cat's are screwed.......I emailed Dennis Reinhart but his only response back to me was to call him and I've been too busy to call him.
I don't know if there is any warrentte on them, but I bought them from him back in 2004. Money is tight so if they're not I'll wait, but I'd like to take off and sell my stage 2 exhaust kit cobra manafolds - (they only have 18k miles on them) comes with Cobra Manafolds, X pipes, cats with pipes and precut pieces(If the cat is bad I'll replace it) and then I'll get a header back kit from kooks but for now I'm going to live with it too.
Kooks is on Long Island, NY so I can have them custom build a set for me......I just want to keep the sound unique, I'm not looking for it to sound like a hot rod or a mustang but I want the horsepower I'll get, so I have to hear a lot of mufflers before I decide, but I'll know when I hear it.

I've had the stuff inside the cats comes loose, or a piece broke off, which then rattled around when accellerating. But this was with my old '92 CV with over 300k kilometers on it.

One more vote for the cats, a friend's car had the cat break apart and it would only make funny exhaust noises under accel

Your mufflers may have caught some of the cat crap. If thats the case that's not good
