Dennis Reinhart wants me to change/check the fuel filter. I agree.
Is this a do it yourself project?
Are there more than one (filter) in the system?
Where is it located?
headed over to the lounge to read more on leo the tazer happy cop.
thankyou

It's a very easy job...
It's located just in front of the pass. rear wheel along the frame...there is just one filter...
Pull the fuel pump fuse...Start car and let it idle, till it dies (no fuel presure)
The fuel filter has snap connectors on each end...unsnap the old...snap in the new...Replace fuel pump fuse...and you are done...It's thast easy!!!
Note: Make sure you wear safety glasses under there to prevent fuel in the eyes...and make sure you have the filter oriented (fuel flows in one direction {look at the arrow on the filter itself}...this will tell you which way the fuel is meant to flow through the filter..."Arrow should point toward the front of the car"
Good Luck...

Fuse box is in the engine compartment just above the battery...Rectangle Box...
It is the third position from the bottom right... 2nd fuse...20 amps "yellow" ...just has the # 20 on it...
Let me clarify...Look at the bottom row...starting from the right...you will see...a fuse...then an empty slot...then a yellow #20 fuse *This is the one!!!

Or..... You can carefully remove the clips on each line of the fuel filter, carefully slide each end off slowly with a bucket or catch can to catch any excess fuel. Undo the hose clamp that holds the fuel filter and remove. Reinstall the lines, replace the clips then reinstall the hose clamp around the filter.
Now turn the key to the run position but do not start, you'll hear a mechanical noise from the pump for a few seconds, repeat until you hear a hum. Then start the engine.
I had the check engine light come on by pulling the fuse with the engine running to stall.

You could also unplug the inertia switch located in the trunk, works the same as pulling the fuse.

Thanks to all.
Project is done.
purchased the 11 dollar wix model from the local store. filter "fitsinwell." the clips broke during disassembly. probably a minnesota cold thing. The new clips are tooo wide. They do not work. Sooo I put the old pcs. back in and secured them with a zip tie. will probably have to go to the ford store and buy the right part. Dennis was right no more bogging out at 5800 rpm. Its even a little quicker now. Nearly got waxed from a dead stop by a POS cadillac circa 1985... ouch. but once the tires stopped spinning it was over.
thanks again to all participants and enthusiasts alike.
And to Mr. correct me but good... LEO does not stand for Law enforcement officer, everybody knows its a constellation. I know cause I am a Libra
L.E.O. might though.

Its very easy to break them and it seems that all the replacement clips are too wide. I replaced my fuel filter twice and the first time the clips that were in the box were too wide as well so off to my bench grinder to shave off a little to make them fit. The second time I had a hard time getting the clips out and snapped them in half, I had to find a auto parts store for replacement clips and they too were just a bit too wide. A bench grinder is your friend for this job.

I always use new fuel line clips (preferably FORD clips--they always fit:)), not worth the chance of lines slipping off the filter. I just remove the old clips and cover line with rag to stop fuel from spraying me as I pull the line off. You can also hit the inertia switch instead, it will trip and stall engine. Once reset it should not turn on the engine light.

I put the broken clips back in and use the wire tie.

The correct fuel filter clips are P/N 2F1Z-9A317-AA. Last time I bought them at the dealer they were $7....EACH.
why not use ss hose clamps instead of the plastic clips???

There are hard plastic connectors on the ends of the fuel lines that slip onto the filter nipples.

Oh, so we're not talking about flexible rubber-type hoses you clamp on. I guess you can tell I haven't replaced a fuel filter on one of these yet...
