View Full Version : What's wrong with my heat?

Seems like, when I start my car (remote start) and give it about 10 minutes or so, I go out, and the inside of my car is still frigid ass cold. Then, I notice when I have it on high, at times, it sounds like it goes down, not to low but more like medium since it doesn't blow as hard and loud. To get the heat hot I find myself having to give it one good WOT shift and it's fine. WTF is going on?

Sounds like you may have an air pocket in cooling system. Did you do any cooling system work lately? Bleed it out and try again.

A bit off topic but, do you have the factory Mercury remote start system or an aftermarket?

Aftermarket Viper. I haven't done any cooling system work on it at all. Last time it was at the dealer was to get the a/c condenser replaced on it.

They might have had to open the cooling system to access the condensor.

I have that SAME exact problem!!!! I've been trying to figure it out since last winter. Now that its cold here again I'm having the same issue. I'm also noticing the hot air that comes out isnt' really that hot.

The other thing that maybe related is I let the car idle while I was shoveling my drive way. All of a sudden I heard the high speed fan kick on (I've never heard it before) I look in the car and the car temp gauge is at the H!!!. Now it sits 3/4 all the time instead of the usual 1/4. I'm going to data log it today and see if its the gauge or if something is off. Also I'm going to top off the cooling system and burp it.

How can it be cold in MA? It was 8 below zero here in VT this am and my Panther was outside...no remote starts here...Just get in and start and drive. Twenty years old you don't even need a jacket...

Air pocket!!!!! I had it happen several times. It just happens over time. Sometime I have even driven a few miles and then come to a stop without any heat.

They're quite nice, when it's touching 100*, just click my little yellow button two times, car starts with ease, 10 minutes or so I hop in to a nice cold 60*. I would like for it to be the same with heat, except 80*.

The heater cores are about the highest point in the cooling system, so if there's an air pocket it usually ends up there. I had the same problem a week ago when it dropped to -20C here; added about a litre of coolant, burped it and real heat started pouring out again.

I took the burp cap off and filled it as the car was running and it took a good quart or so. I think that did it. I'm going to go out tomorrow with the car nice and cold and re-top it off. I'm hoping its just low. I'll let you guys know the results.

Your best bet is to fill it with the engine cold. The thermostat is open with the engine hot and running, filling it will just send the coolant to the reservoir tank.

Cores are probably bypassed on those cars destined for original registration in FL and AZ. :)

Gentlemen, find a hot women to drive the car that will help to warm things up a bit!...by the way you might want to check your Blend Door Actuator. I just had mine replaced (grrrr) but now all is warm here in sunny So-Cal...

Good luck, stay warm,
J

Oh god not blend door horrors (See explorer/ranger forum for details) ITS HELL!!!! I had 3 break on my old explorer. I forgot to top mine off before work today. I'll top it off after it cools down when I get home.

Mine was doing the same exact thing. If my car was sitting still, cold air cold air came out the vents. It was an air pocket just like they say. Fill it at the cross pipe as this is the highest point in the system. If your fan wasn't working, that's something entirely different. I fought and won that battle two years ago.

i had the same prob with my first marauder! im a ford tech and the best way to get rid of the air pocket is to use a vacuume coolant system filler. it basically sucks all the air out of the system and then it sucks in new coolant and the waterfall behind the dash is gone and the heat is great.

Well I'm done driving the MM this winter after today so I will drop it off at the dealer and let them fix it since it was their mistake.

All I had to do was fill it at the cross pipe. Problem solved.

I just noticed the same problem, only when the car was at idle or at a stop light the engine temp would rise and no heat would come through the vents. It got as hot at 250 at one point. going down the highway everything seemed normal... This wouldnt be from a bubble would it? T'stat sticking maybe?

Again, same thing. Mine would mysteriously climb into the red for a second. This stopped when I topped off the system from the cross pipe.
Just do it.
