View Full Version : OMG, driver's door hinge on the way out already???

There was no problem at 99,967, when I bought the car back in June. I tested the door before I handed over the $ by trying to rock it up and down. It was perfect.
It DID however, squeak quite a bit. I HATE THAT. So, I kept shooting it with WD-40, until it stopped. It took many apps, but finally stopped it for good.
Now the bad part: a couple more months, and it starts shutting funny. :mad2: Tested it by rocking it up and down, and low and hehold we have significant MOVEMENT:eek:
Any one else have this on their MM, already???
Is it a tough fix?
Rehanging a door without messing up the paint sounds like a tough job... Argh...
Any advice would be appreciated.
My 95 CV had the same issue, and a local body shop that did Taxis used to replace the hinge with a Mustang part. I can't remember the reason why, anymore, it was so long ago... But, I think because it was because the Mustang part was serviceable...

Haven't had the issue yet on mine. Only vehicle I had to do that on was my old 1995 Mercury Cougar. Had to replace the lower door hinge and door striker.

1st mistake WD-40. WD-40 evaporates leaving no lasting lubrication. Proper spray lube for a door hinge would be a white lithium grease. It is sprayable, but as the carrier oil evaporates, it leaves behind a clean grease.

There are a lot of Plastic / Rubber / Neoprene components in hinges today. Petroleum based products (W-D 40) will deteriorate those plastic/rubber parts. That is likely the cause of your issues with hinges.
Silicone is a good lubricant for rubber/plastic parts, if needed at all. I have not put anything on mine, no squeeks, no sags...
I would recommend stop using W-D 40 on your hinges. If a squeek bothers you, use a pure silicone gel or spray, just a bit, a little goes a long way........
Sorry to hear you you need to replace your hinges.

I know I have to lube mine frequently. I'll replace mine before my coverage ends.

No problems to date in the Marauder - knock on wood - except the door kind of sticks around the weather seal area after washing or a rain.
Now, the CVPI has a BAD droop on the driver door when opening/closing and used to have a squeak. Sprayed it and the squeak was gone, but now the detents that help hold the door open don't work.
Anyway, I will need a new door hinge on the CVPI at some point as it bugs me dealing with that.

Just this week I started to hear a creaking noise coming from the lower hinge (driver's side). There is now some rust in that area because my MM sits outside nearly all the time (gasp!). I just lubed both sides with spray white lithium grease. I hope that helps.

You could move the roller that contacts the detent, it probably has a flat spot front sticking in one position.
I don't like to use white lube as it attracts dirt to the hinge. I perfer to use silicone, only negative it that you have to apply it frequently. You can also use the silicone on the weatherstrips on the doors, they won't stick, and won't be greasey

Man, I can't believe I screwed myself like this... When it went up suddenly, I started wondering about the WD-40
The reason I used it, was because the heavier duty lubes I tried JUST WON'T PENETRATE. I have to use more, and they don't seem to last as long...

Thanks for the excellent explanation, and your sentiments. It's a really costly job, and a PITA. You have to take the e-brake out to do the bottom hinge. The top one - it's a nightmare - the entire dash must come out...

Thanks fastblackmerc, appreciate the suggestion.

Man! Where else can you get this kind of service. I didn't even need to leave my lazy boy to see the manual. Way to go, Magin!
Thanks guys. I'm going to try and find a good silicone lube to use. Hopefully it will work as well as the WD-40 without destroying everything!
I wish they used replaceable steel pins with bronze bushings like the old days...

Do it Roy! The job is booked at like 9 hours, because the entire dash has to come out. Definitely NOT what you want to do later on...
It's weird how some of us have issues with this, and some of us don't...

Mine just started the creak shortly before being stored for the winter.
I guess I will uncover it and spray that hinge.
Thanks!

I can not tell how many people I have corrected on this matter. WD-40 is a great product, just not for the door hinges:up:

No problems with the MM, but oddly enough, I did have to replace the hinge on my 95 XR7...
Should've waited on the Cougar, 'cause not two months later I sold it, to get the MM.

So, I guess that you would also not recommend "I Can't Believe Its Not Butter" as a hinge lubricant either. ;)

When I open my door, it sticks a little and then it seems like it drops a little as it comes up stuck... Angers me

Actually this would probably be fine, and not eat the plastic. I don't think it is a high pressure lube though, and it would probably biodegrade...

Nothing on my MM yet.
My 95 GM with 149k on the odo used to squeak and thunk on drivers side pretty badly and to a lesser on the pass side. First I was doing the WD40 thing which lasted for about 5 secs and then switched to a Lithium based spray on. Alls quiet on the western front now.
If it starts squeaking, I spray it again. Can't remember when I did it last. Probably lots of Lithium on those hinges now. I've also been lucky in that I have not noticed any door closing, sag or allignment issues. More worried about the seat tracks.
At any rate if the MM doors start getting noisy, I'll go straight to the lithium! Hey the silicon may be good (or better) too, just no experience with it.

I'm starting to get a creaking noise in the same area. Will try using the spray white lithium grease on it. Thanks to all for the helpful tips.
