Personally, what I do is wait til' the Fuel light comes on. FIll it just until the pump stops itself (no topping it off) Reset the trip-o-meter, When the light comes on again, I get to the nearest gas station, write down the mileage, fill er' up till it stops. Then you can use the miles you drove on that full tank from fuel light to fuel light as a pretty accurate gage. Just divide the miles driven by the gallons of gas put in. Of course, it's not a perfect science, but overall its a pretty good way to tell.

I top off and drive till the needle is in the red bar 10-20 miles past "Low light".
Last few times the light came on @ 280, I'm usually 15-18 mpg.

Best if you use the same pump too for better accuracy since it will shut off at the same point.
Then it just a matter of MILES/GALLONS needed to bring it back to full again.

Pump it in till it is full, set mileage thingy to zero, drive for a week or so then go fill it up. Divide miles use by gallons used and you have your MPG.
