Tonight a got a chance to run my stock '04 CV Sport, against my brother's 1970 Mercury Cylclone GT. We went from a 10mph roll and I didn't stand a chance. He jumped me by two car lengths immediately. His torque advantage was much greater. Even though he is running a 3.00 gear ratio to my 3.27. By the time my engine started pulling hard, it was too late, game over!

The Cyclone is "only" running a 351-C. It's really a two barrel motor with some mild work done to it. It was bored out 060, has a mild cam, a 4 barrel, headers, and a set of Flowmasters. The car has about 330,000 miles on it. The engine was redone twice before my brother got it, and it is tired now.

On one hand it sucks to get beat. On the other hand, it feels good to know that the old musclecars still rule !

I didn't mind losing this one !

By the way the Cyclone beats my other brother's 1995 Mustang Cobra too, so I don't feel so bad. :burn:

Those 351 Clevelands are something,As a teen my buddy had a 72 4dr Torino with a 351C 2v. We use to blow the doors off 350 chevelles that had 4 barrels every friday night at an abandoned airport it was great fun!

Put 4 bbl heads and a 4 bbl carb with headers and see what those 351 C's will do. If you are resourceful, go get the Aussi heads.

Don't feel too bad...you're carrying alot more weight too. But, I agree, if you're gonna lose, lose to an old school Muscle not a cigar pipe "tuner"

Back in 73 I picked up a 70 Torino GT with a 351C 4V,4 speed toploader, manual steering,HD suspension and cooling, and a 9" nodular rear end with a Detroit Locker with 3:00 gears. I put a set of Kustom 33" primary headers with 3 1/2" collectors on it with 2 1/" pipes all the way out the back with genuine Turbo mufflers,a Hays Magna Pulse electronic ign,Big Mallory coil and an aluminum flex fan. and an open bottom Mopar 383 Road Runner open bottom air cleaner with a monster air filter. Wasn't much in the quarter, but get it rolling and it would fly. Damn thing thought it was a 428 and I never told it different.
I STILL remember the VIN,0H35M150596. Last I heard it went down south. Dark Ivy Green with reflective yellow laser stripes & black interior.

Only a 351C??? The 351C is not just some kind of 350. That engine has massive balls.

Best smallblock ever made. They used it in the Pantera's too.
If you want to build a stout 351C nowadays they recommend the Aussie block and Aussie 2V heads,it's darn near impossible to use all of the 4V heads breathing capacity on a streetable engine, the 4V heads out flowed chebby's 427 heads by 25 or 33% in a 100% stock comparison!

I was being sarcastic when I wrote "only" a 351-C. That's why I put in qoutes. The full potential of that motor was never fully realized. If the 1970's didn't call for the killing of high performance engines, the Cleveland would have benefitted from more R&D and would have come to earn the respect it deserved as the greatest small block engine ever made...by anybody !
Yes, modern technology has made great improvements in the 351-C but I think we still have not seen it's full potential.
