View Full Version : oil gauge
Has anyone looked into why the oil pressure gauge does not move? Mine goes to 60, and just stays there no matter what the rpm's are. Why put in a nice Autometer gauge, and just use it like an idiot light? The dealer said, "that's just the way that it works". Is there a different sending unit that can be used to make the gauge more functional?

I was told it's not a COMPLETE "idiot gauge" but, close to it. If it read exact reading...it could create a maintenence nightmare for Ford/L-M with folks coming in everytime there was a slight change in the reading.
Don't know if that's true, but it is what I was told...
Then why even have one? I would really like to know what my pressure is. I thinking of getting a different sending unit, or go to a mechanical one.

If the needle is pointing stright up, or thereabout, you oil pressure is fine.. The guage is supposed to mimick thise used in race cars.......

Guys,
It is "fake" for all practical purposes... as Wags said getting a different sending unit should be the trick to make it work right. As soon as I can get a wiring diagram I'll see how hard that will be...

or might be a great place to put your Supercharger Boost gauge????

We shall see.....:D Sean Highland Motorsports is now advertising their MM package with early 03 delivery... When I talked to them I asked if they needed a "beta" car for their Alabama facility... Now if I can just convince my wife that this will save her buying presents for the next few years..:p And not cause me to go broke making up for it...

If the MM is anything like the F-150 trucks, then there is a piece of resistance wire between the sender and the gauge. The sender is simply a switch type "binary/on-off" rather than an variable resistance type sender. This means that as long as you have oil pressure and the switch closes, with the resistance wire in place, you have a "fixed" mid-range indication rather then a "real reading". This is also the way Impalas and Caprices are that are non 9C1/police cars. Only police get the real gauge. We can get vary the resistance, watch the gauge and then select a sender that will be a variable type meeting those min/max specs. Also run a new circuit, sender to gauge to bypass the inline resister. IF this is in fact how Merc did it. I thought the same thing when I watched mine for the first time!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and guess that the Marauder gauge WILL work with a simple sender swap to the Autometer 0-100 PSI electrical oil pressure sender.
The sender is available separately from Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com/) under part number ATM-2242. It will cost about $35 shipped to your door.
Also, as mentioned, you may have to run a new wire from the sender to the gauge to bypass any in-line resistors in the stock wiring.
Now whether or not there is room in the stock "sender" location on the motor to swap in this bad boy or not is another matter :). Having not seen the Marauder underhood yet, I can't tell you for sure.

To climb out on that limb a little further... ideally you would retain the factory sender for the Check Engine via the computer and tee in a real sender to the guage.... Then you have both worlds working... Come on wiring diagrams...:D

Guys,
Here is the wiring for the Oil Pressure Guage. This is from the October 2002 Issue DVD: 2003 Mercury Marauder : Wiring Diagrams: Section 062 Instrument Cluster Performance.
Circuit Number 31
20 Guage Wire
WH/RD Color Coded
Here is the circuit path from Sender to Guage.
Pin Connector
1 C103 This is at the Sender Unit
25 C1026
47 C268
5 C219
4 C226 This is at the Guage
3 C226 This is at the guage leading to the power
Power is from: Central Junction Box 14A068 F2.6 The junction box Fuse 2.6 is a 15Amp
The factory Sending Unit is mounted next to the oil filter. The sender is a simple on/off sender. Either you have pressure (5PSI I have read elsewhere) or you do not. The details listed for this switch are Pressure Switch 9278 (151-9). The diagrams do not show or mention any resistance wire in the input circuit to the guage. The guage may have a resistor, I haven't looked.
We do not have the "Check Guages" capability in the MM like the CV/GM and most other products. The guage is the only place you will see a problem..at least until it's too late anyway..
One thing I could not find anywhere is the thread spec's for the sender. Hopefully, AutoMeter already has that one...
I hope this helps...if you have any questions fire away...
