What is the best way to do this? Thanks.
It would help if we knew EXACTLY what you have?

Go to your local FLAPS and get a K&N filter cleaning kit. Follow the directions.

I just wondering if there was an effective way to wash the filter without buying the kit. I have the K&N intake.

I guess you could use a mild detergent (simple green?) to break down the filter oil...
Then need re-charge oil for the filter...Don't spray too much, or it will get sucked on to your MAF...then performance will diminish...

I just wondering if there was an effective way to wash the filter without buying the kit.Sure, you can WASH the filter without the kit, but it needs to be re-oiled after washing...if you can find a suitable oil then you're golden, but isn't it easier to buy everything you need to do the job properly in one place?
The kit is only $10 bucks.
