I was looking into taking a trip from Manhattan from MD. My son (7) would like to go more than I do. I don't know much about going, but I was looking to go to Niketown (for me), but where can I take him? What is there to do? I was watching the Patriots/Giants game (that was bittersweet), and saw some skating at Rockerfella plaza; is that the place to be? Any good Marriotts around? Is it safe to drive my Marauder around, where do I park?

Take him to the top of the Empire State building and the museums. Go to tickets at time Square and get afternoon theater tickets. There is a Marriot at Times Square. Ride the subway to get around, its safe and he willl love it. I used to live there and go back every few years. Wander the Village around 8th street and be ready to feed him. The kids want to stop at every deli and pastry shop. Plenty to do and you will have fun. Call Paul {BlackeNed 300} and I bet he could also give you a few more ideas and maybe even meet up with you.

Hey
Its not as far as you think from MD. It took me only 3 hours from Hagerstown MD and that was driving conservative. Depending on what you wanna see, your looking at a full weekend of stuff, especially doing all the sites in times square. If you are planning to stay in NYC then you wont have to drive around, millions of cabs around, buses stop every 5 minutes and the subway is very reliable.
Like John said, You'll wanna check out the empire state building along with the museum of natural history, central park, the bodies exhibit on the southstreet seaport, the NYC hard rock cafe, the aquarium, The MTA railroad museum in brooklyn,The circle line tour is also very nice. Hopefully your hotel has a parking lot and they are reasonalble for your stay. Parking is the number one PITA around here. your Marauder will definitly be safe but if you are parked in the wrong area they will tow your car immediately.
Feel free to PM me for any info.

Take the train out of Union Station in DC or from Alexandria, VA. Travel through Baltimore, Philadelphia enroute to the Big Apple. Use public transportation while you are there. No parking and no worries about the car. :D

Get to the museum of Natural history. The seven year old will love. Plan on 3 to 4 hours there. Great dinosaur displays. You will have a good time watching him.

If you are there for a day pick 2 things. Empire State and Museum of Natural History.

If you are still into the holidays then Rockerfella.

If the weather isn't great the Circle Line. Just remember once the boat leaves you can't get off till it's over.

I always go to the Empire State first. It has a great view and orients you to the city.

Remember he is 7, don't set yourself up for failure by dragging him around a bunch of strange places all while he has to mind his p's and q's. Yea lets get him good and exhausted, throw on top sensory overload and then we get to discipline him when he acts like a tired and hungry 7 year old.:D

:burnout:There's a bus several times a day out of several Metro station locations that will take you right into Manhatten for $20 per person. Look for their advertisements in the Washington Post and/or call the Post to get this info.
This way you can point out things to your son as you head for the Big Apple and you don't have to spend 3-4 hours watching the road-good father/son bonding here-especially o0n the way back to Maryland.

Since you would park your car anyhow, you would be better off taking public transportation and/or cabs to get from one place to another.

You probably will not get out of Manhatten, depending on how long you visit, but if you have time, take him to Coney Island in Brooklyn and eat at NATHANS.There are some rides open but this place is like no other place on earth-same goes for the folks there.:)

Thanks guy, looks like the Empire State Building and the Natural History Museum, and maybe a bus ride to Manhattan, would that be Greyhound or Trailways?

I would take the train?

Greyhound and Trailways are owned by the same Company now.

See if Peter Pan or Martz Trailsways and a run to New York from your area.

The bus company I am thinking of runs new modern buses but they are a new company(you can get their name from the washington Post) and they run their small ads in the Post usually before the weekend. The major bus carriers will cost a bit more but also take you into Manhatten:)

Not sure where in MD you stay, but I never been to NY and I wouldnt drive the MM up there...I hear of NY bus trips every saturday for 45 dollars and you get like 10 dollars back...But I dont know your childs patience on the road for a bus trip. As for things to do, a buddy of mine was in Manhattan and he said just walking up and down the block was eventful enough for him! Hope I could be a LITTLE help...Yea...where in MD are you???

:burnout:I got that bus info for you- the bus company is called VAMOOSE and they now charge $25 each way. There's guaranteed seating with a reservation. They leave from Bethesda and Arlington and leave from Penn Station NYC. Try www.vamoosebus.com (http://www.vamoosebus.com) or 877-3932828
Enjoy and I'll look for you at the Safford Lincoln/Mercury Show in May.

Maybe its just me; but I'd feel a little skittish about being dropped off in NYC by a bus called "Vamoose". ;)

I never been to NY and I wouldnt drive the MM up there...

 Try driving a tractor trailer through midtown manhattan with a 14' wide, 50' long air conditioning unit on a Friday night when everyone is out partying and site seeing with hundreds of cabs trying to get in front of you.
I've done it several times and I laugh at you for not wanting to drive a Marauder through NYC!!!

If you come to NY with your car, let me know the day and time and I can arrange something for you as far as safe parking around 35th Street on the east side (right by the Empire State building)..

Thanks guys, now I have so many options. I am planning on taking some neighbors with me. The last time I went to Manhattan I was working for Dunbar Armored delivering jewelry back to the Jewelry district. I am looking forward to my trip, would have been nice the past couple of days with this awesome weather in January, must be the calm before the storm! Thanks again guys!
