I have heard information about underdrive pulleys that concern me. I welcome some feedback.

Do underdrive pulleys
Q1.) not work well in stop / start traffic?
Q2.) reduce the coolant flow and the alternator speed?
Q3.) only count when you are at revs above 5000?

Better in stop/start traffic due to less inertia to 'spool up'.

Reduce coolant flow slightly, but not enough to have made a difference here in sunny and hot FL.

Reduces alt speed. Only a problem at idle. Can turn up idle speed with SCT or Predator. Really only matters if running additional load (like a big stereo)

Only 'count' about 5K. What? Do they magically change or something? A reduced ratio is a reduced ratio regardless of RPM! I think they make the biggest difference in throttle response... that's from 800 RPM!

I have them on my MM and have no problems whatsoever. The only thing that I found a little different was that the a/c is not as cool at an idle than with the stock pullies.

I had U/D pulleys on The Blackbird before the Trilogy install...the only issue was as Brian mentioned ^^^ the A/C was not as cold at idle. Upping the idle in drive by 100 RPM solved that problem.

Where did you hear that U/D pulleys were only good above 5000 RPM?

Mine worked great and added quite a bit at the dragstrip. Go for it as you will like them.

I've had my U/D's installed for over 40K miles. No problems, just kick up the idle 100-200 RPMs.

How can this be done? Can I do it, or does Dennis need to alter it? I have the Xcal2 from him.

You should be able to do this yourself. Engine Idle is right under engine timing on the Xcal software custom menu.

You can adjust Idle Rpm, both in gear and neutral.
Go to manual and read about user adjustments.

I have them, and have had no problems. DR also set my idle up 100 rpm with his tune.

As far as performance, SOTP tells me the U/D's let the engine spool up a lot quiker under WOT.

I believe these are the ones that fit our MM. You won't use the alternator pulley. I decided to go with the steel pulleys instead of the aluminum ones.

I've been thinking about these but have been on the fence for a while. Always wondered about the low charge at idle but never thought of bumping the idle up lol.

Are they really worth it with being NA?

Is an electric water pump a better solution than underdrive pulleys? Am I confusing mechanical functions (not correct in my assertion/question)?

A friend writes, "Underdrive pulleys are old school. If you really want to make a difference, go with an electric water pump. Note also that the Marauder turns OFF the alternator at WOT. Also, you can't get 93 Octane in CA so your engine runs hotter." Your thoughts, please?

Your friend must have a "special" set of pulleys..

Does he also have a turbonator?

I have done both the UD pulleys and the high performance water pump, no complaints yet!!

Pardon my ignorance, but is an electric water pump not a better choice? I have heard the Marauder turns OFF the alternator at WOT. I live in CA, so I you cannot get 93 Octane; only 91. Won't my engine run hotter on 91 octane and underdrive pulleys.

My understanding is that an electric water pump takes the torque of the pump out of the equation and thus frees up some HP in the engine. The underdrives allow you to get to the powerband a bit quicker. There is a change in WP pully in the UD setup to compensate for the RPM change, but with an electric water pump, the pully is free wheeling.

You can do both.

I run both also....UDPs AND the Meziere electric water pump.

Best of both worlds;

The Meziere runs at full rpm all the time,
The UDPs run the A/C, alternator & power steering pump at a slower rpm to save on parasitic losses.

I did have to set my idle speed +100 rpm when it was tuned.

BTW: Does the OEM Marauder utilize the WOT alternator cut-out?

You may also want to look into a Stewart water pump. Better flow with less load on the pulleys. Half the money of an electric!

We did arejayesss's car with the Stewart pump and the UDP's all at once. They made a huge SOTP difference.

Yes, I enjoyed immensely the manner in which my automobile would create a loss of friction between the steel belted radials and the concrete roadway after the installation of the stewart water pump and Under Drive Pulleys:burnout::burnout::burn out:

When I installed my idler assy. it has always made a whining sound from 1-3k rpm. I was told it would go away but it hasn't lol. I pulled it off and had a mechanic check the bearings and their fine, he said it just might be how it's going to be.

So with the UD pulleys and the Elec. water pump is there noticeable SOTP feeling?

Well, I can not isolate these two. I installed, in one sitting, the UDs, the water pump, a 180 tstat, and an Xcal2. So, yes I felt a big difference with all these things. But if you ask Rich, he will swear he got another 8 or so HP from the water pump alone.

Just for clarification, we are talking the Stewart mechanical WP. And yes, I swear I got HP from it. I had UD's already and did the Stewart WP. It was a personal preference since I didn't want to load the car's already taxed electrical system with another load. I noticed a difference immediately.

Later, Ryan came over and we swapped pulley's since I needed his stockers for my Procharger. We did the UD's and a new Stewart pump on his.

In Florida heat and humidity, his car went from unable to break tires to a decided small patch and a 1-2 chirp without power braking.

BTW, Ryan's UD's are on their third motor. I inherited them the same way - by swapping a new Procharger owner for stockers. I would guesstimate they are well over 100K combined at this point. They are still going strong!

Most will say the Meziere brings on a few more HP. Probly does. No load is, in fact, less than reduced load. Again, I was watching electric loads and the Stewart is 1/2 the money.

This, however, is a discussion on UD's. You'll notice right away. I did. You'll notice more with either a Stewart water pump or an electric pump.

These items in no way affect the tune, either. They simply reduce power-robbing parasitic load on the other side of the motor.

I gots mines from Summit, Rex. You'll run 5-10 degrees cooler and pick up a little throttle response and SOTP HP.

Add some water wetter to your coolant while you're at it. I use 2 bottles and 50/50.
