I had the same encounter on 290 in Mass with a late 80's camaro... Some kid with a cowl induction hood on it... he thought he was king s*** and he was gassing it and letting of next to me so I punched it and he saw the car sit back and he punched it but there was no competition so he tried again with him punching it first and he hardly got in front of me before I ran him down... I love people whose put stuff like CI hoods or decals etc. to make it look powerful... I call it "sticker power" when the car is bone stock or little mods and they have a these stickers and crap on it. We used to make fun of how much horsepower each of those "sticker power" stickers gave the car.

We call the 80's camaros "redneck rockets" around my area... I know two guys that have had theirs for 10 years and I still don't know why they keep those things around... The are in perfect condition but for crying out loud.. Our boats can beats those POS's... Those things are a dime a dozen and they do nothing for me

I didn't think that they made 300A's in 2004?

Hey 03slickvic: Do you have mods? I was just looking at the as-tested-by-Road-and-Track data on the 750IL, and he really should have crushed you by a long shot. What'ch ya got under your hood?

Edit: I just looked at your profile. No wonder you toasted him! :)

I love most any F-Body, including the thirdgen's (used to have an 88 Camaro), but there's really not much to them, in stock form.
Here's me, bone stock vs. a late 80' Firechicken (http://www.qwksvt.com/Vids/14.8-WinVsFirebird.wmv).

Of course (like anything powered by a Chev 350), it's fairly easy to make it go, so you never know what's lurking under the hood...

I had an 88 Firebird Formula running 11.2 on 12psi via ATI ProCharger. Full interior, A/C, etc..... Complete sleeper all the way down to the turn down exhaust tips. I would drive it 2 hours to the track, toss the DR's on, get my 11's slips, then drive it back home.
Damn I miss that car. :bigcry:

Laugh if you want, but I do miss my old Camaro:alone: I have a 1980 Z28 sitting in the garage, as a (much neglected) long term project, but would love to own another thirdgen, at some point...

.

I sold my 88 Camaro (IROC, 305, 5-sp) to buy my Marauder.

The only think I miss is the manual transmission.

The car has less than 40 thousand miles on it, and has been babied all it's life -but it still was a rattle-trap. GM plastic interiors just don't hold up - no matter how well you take care of them.

My 88 had 220 HP, the automatic 305 had 195, the 350 was rated at 230. (probably understated)

I liked the low end grunt of the TPI engine, but I'm getting used to the top-end DOHC 4.6. It's still disconcerting to see the thing turning 6 grand on the highway when I go to pass someone. The TPI engines (stock form, long runners) can't breathe well above about 4 grand or so.

I had a '67 that I never got to build up... my dad bought it for me when I was 14 to slowly work on it for when I was old enough and I never worked on it because I was busy with school so he sold it on me... I was pissed... had a 4 spd 305 in it and we were going to put my dad's old motor in it... a 350 with 420 HP... GRRRR

I only 80's style Camaro I would consider driving is the rare 350ci, 5spd, t-tops Iroc Z. Friends older bro had one, man that thing would crack windshields if the tops were off and you launched it right.

The only versions I likes were the Formula and the GTA. Both had a really classy look about them and were rarely driven by the greasers that you would normally see in an IROC or plain jane version.

Hmm, I guess since I traded my IROC for the Marauder, there's at heast one greaser driving a marauder.

To the best of my knowledge, there were no 3rd gen. factory made 350 5 speed cars - the guy who bought mine (new, from the dealer) tried to order one. The 305 5-speed has the 350 cam in it (same p/n) and was rated at 220 HP vs 230 for the 350. Back when I owned one, I did a lot of research, and I never heard of a factory 350 manual trans. car. The 305 looks just like a 350, and more than once I was told by the owner of one of these that it was a 350, but the VIN always indicated 305. Not to mention all of the 305s that were yanked out and replaced with 350s. (I thought mine would join them, but I bought a Marauder instead! So far, so good!)

It's odd, I've been trying to look it up but really can't verify if this is true or not. I've even checked autotrader and only found a few. His car was stock too, he bought brand new back in '89 and sold it a few years ago and he definately said it was a 350 (even saw it on the block) and had a 5 speed.

It is not true, there were no 350's with the 5speed. The 5speed was availeable as a Tremec T-5, and the TPI units had the super strong 9bolt Austrian rear with 3.45's. It held up great until 12psi came in down the road.
The 350's were all autos, some had T-Tops. The 1989 TTA (Turbo T/A) had the good ol 3.8L turbo V6 alla Grand National. The most sought after T/A, EVER.

No thanks, I would never be seen behind the wheel of a 3rd gen Camaro. Thanks for the info though, I will have to inform him then, perhaps he lied to me, or it was swapped in at the dealer for some odd reason.

I was younger and skinnier when I had mine. The MM is more powerful and more comfortable.

I'd like to be able to have both, but I don't regret the trade one bit.

Now, if I could only get a 6-speed panther car....

Typical over EVERYTHING GM made in the 80's, but more prevalent in the F-Bodies... Wonder if it was due to the unibody design? Did you also have the typical wear pattern on the driver's seat, wearing through the cloth in the bottom corner?

I think these are good looking cars but I could never see myself buying one just because of the crowd that drives them.
