What causes the alternator to cut out at WOT is it the alternator clutch or the computer?

Do you have Lidio tune? His tune cuts it out. Nice feature.

Im pretty sure its the clutch that shuts the field off at WOT.

The alternator repair man here in town thinks I am mistaken, Then he proudly showed 2 of them on his work bench..."I dont know what its for."
(the clutch).... If you find out, tell me.
Mercury dealer in minneapolis thinks its the "coils"
"have'n a lotta trouble with those you know"
Me?? I have the reinhart tune. If its in the tune then its fixable.
Why would the volts drop at WOT? What possible advantage could there be?

Less drag on the engine, more power to the wheels.
I have had to replace my alternator twice in the last six months. Luckily the second was a freebie, since it failed after only two months.

It is in the tuning, and can be turned on off, and Jerry W came up with this and shared in information.

The alternator's 'clutch' is really just a mechanical one way locking hub...kinda like a bicycle's rear hub.
You can drive it one direction, but it freewheels the opposite direction.
It keeps the serpentine belt-alternator pulley from chirping on upshifts when the alternator is still spinning at 6000 rpm, but the crank pulley just slowed to 4500 rpm after the shift.
The alternator can slow down as it's clutch freewheels.
You can turn off the alternator's field current at WOT electrically with a tune.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but do a search for 'alternator clutch', this subject has been discussed MANY times already.
You can replace it with a non cluthed version.
Pulley can be bought at Ford.

OK if I understand this....
the clutch is good. it takes away chirp and slip during hard shifts.
The shut down is a tuning issue. It is a power adder.
Hard core machines want lots of electricity at high rpm.
ie., no shut down ever, in fact 200 amps.
I want to romp it, in the dark... and see the road.
Sooo. Change the tuning, keep the clutch? Yes?????

YEP!
I wouldn't use an alternator WOT cut out in my tune with today's electric fuel pumps and injectors...I want all the juice I can get when she's running at 6200 rpm!
I believe that the clutched alternator is only on the earlier - German made alternators...I've got one on my '03 300A and I like it.

I repaced my stock alternator with a 200amp unit with no clutch about 6mo ago and have had no issues and no chirps at WOT gear changes. I did keep the stock alternator with clutch just in case a problem was to arise. This is just my experience others may have had issues.

Well...may as well fix your A/C as well.
Why be hot at wot? :help:
There were reasons for some items temporarily turned off at WOT.
I mean, how long do you WOT? To the moon?...

With out headlights I wont WOT anywhere. Daytime restrictions would apply.
And I would not play with anyone that does. He could chalk it up as a "kill" if he wanted to.
I dont actually want to kill anyone. Starting with me.
Just selfish I guess.

I think we still have a "Battery" for the instant the alternator stops providing electrical current.....
Sorry, that sounds sarcastic............. I mean, really, isn't that what the battery does for us? Hell, there is enough juice to start the car, or run all the lights and accesories for a while with the engine off. I could see if you ran WOT for, for say, 15 minutes, with no alternator. Look how long a car will run on a fully charged battery and a bad alternator. (Thank God)

LOL
That's true...the battery should keep everything humming just fine but I'm driving lots of electrical accessories including; PIAA headlights, an auxillary fan cooled transmission cooler,
a Meziere electric water pump, BAP, GT fuel pump, big injectors, and an (upcoming) methanol injection system pump (I do turn off the A/C and the stereo at the track!:o).
I wonder if someone who is an electrical wiz could figure out the voltage drop on the electrical system at WOT when the alternator cuts out with all the above mentioned equipment..?

It does.
We never actually lose headlights. They just go a bit dimmer as do the dash lights. I have pullies and mine are very noticable dimming.
This fear thread is really bad. Newbies are gonna read this and misinterpret. Then they will waste money on an un-needed swap as a result. Please let's NOT get the concensus here thinking this is the case.:shake:
And to bring up another pansy concern...why are you going WOT in the dark, in traffic, obviously concerned with who will see you? If it's wildlife, they won't move headlights or not. My longest wot is about 7 seconds...70mph to 140mph. I certainly did not do it when someone was around and concerned with bright headlights.

OK then. My apologies.

What possible advantage could there be?
Probably gains 3 to 5 horsepower, just as the electric water pump does (reduced drag on the drive belt).
Hey Dennis, you should come up with a dual forklift type 6V trunk mounted battery (#200) kit for the dudes/dudettes with 5,000 watt stereos that use the big line voltage capacitors!
Drag-race with the stereo, water pump, alternator, A/C, DVD, Shiatsu massage cushion, waterbed heater, etc. all running at once.
When will we see a stretch-Limo Marauder with spinner 24" chrome wheelcovers?
