Answer: rayjay's DTR on black ice when pulling out to pass last night. The roads had been dry and clean for the 1st 115 miles of my trip home. Air temp was hanging between 35-37F, so no worries about any ice. I was behind a Buick doing 15 under the limit for about fives miles on a high traveled county road. My wife says there is a short passing zone coming up. As I came out of the curve into the passing zone I indicated my pass, pulled out to the left and hit the throttle. The rear end immediately came fully around. I was too busy trying to regain control, but my wife and daughter counted four 360's, all on the pavement. Keep in mind that these were not immediately back to back 360's. At one point we were headed backwards into the woods that are only 10 feet off the pavement. How I kept her out I don't know. The man upstairs must have also been in the car with us. Some skill and whole lot of luck kept the DTR from getting wrecked. Hitting a tree backwards at 40+ mph would have finished the car. Upon reflection that area of road is shielded from the sun and wind due to the closeness of the woods on both sides of the highway. It probably never dried out yesterday and froze up when the temp went below 32F. It was 30F when I looked after the whoopty doos. My studded snows were worthless in this situation, the road was glare ice for quite a distance. Needless to say I did 15 under the limit until I got off that stretch of highway. And the Buick? He pulled over in the little town up ahead and let me pass.

I am very happy to hear that you and your family, including the Marauder are all in good shape, and unharmed.
when I spun out in the rain and grass it was very much like ice, zero control.
I was not so lucky, $8500 in repairs

Congrats Ray on saving your MM. Sounds like a pretty hairy experience. Gotta use extra caution on those slick roads especially when the temp is hanging right at the freeze mark. Glad this turned out OK for you and your gang.
I am guessing that you were still behind the Buick when you did your acrobatics. Otherwise, he would have pulled over much earlier to let you go on your way.
Long ago, I did a twin 360* maneuver in my Dad's '62 Chevy BelAir S/W through a stop sign intersection. Of course, I had lots of room on either side after the car passed in front of me. Came out the other side and just kept on going .... with a slightly elevated heart rate. Putting the car into a slide sideways was the only thing I could think of when I underestimated my stopping ability on snow & ice. Missed the crossing car by maybe a foot. Never told my father about that incident. :o

I believe you are right. The Buick had most likely been through there earlier and knew there was ice on the road. There have been a number of fatal MVAs on that stretch of the OxBow. You just never think it will happen to you. Luckily I've driven all my life on snow/ice in the winter and have experience with "loosing it". Still, I'd rather not do it again...

Ray good to hear that between the Big Guy's watchful eye and your skill that it all worked out okay. Sounded pretty hairy there for a while.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. If you live where it goes below freezing, everyone needs to be aware of the black ice menace. I have seen first hand many MVAs caused by it. It irks me to no end when people say there is no such thing. I guess they are just lucky to have not experienced it. I remember one particular fatal where a unnamed agency spent all day trying to figure out what caused the accident. Full accident reconstruction team effort. A couple days later I asked one of their Sgts why they spent so much time on it when it was plain that black ice was the cause. "Black ice? What ice, there was no ice when I got there. I advised him there was when I fell on my behind 10 seconds after arriving at the scene...
SCCH, Brittany has had a set back with the arm. We are not sure what is going on. She sees the surgeon on Thursday. Tomorrow we start the lawsuit(s) process with a attorney recommended by one of our good friends here on MM.net. Oh boy, here we go.

It's amazing how fast these cars can do a 180... Glad you and the family are okay. My last episode cost me $2500.00 which was not bad considering how much worse it could have been.

Ain't that the truth !!! $2,500 would be barely noticeable. ;)
And yes, we are pulling for Brittany here in Virginia too. Tell her to hang in there -- she is a true Marauderer !!

Mostly steering, on/off the brakes, throttle on when going straight backwards and a TON of luck. When you drive on icy roads for as many years as I have it becomes instinctive. The best thing you can do is find a large empty parking lot and practice.

I've been where you are, just not with my MM. I was out on 136 in rural Illinois with my old Lincoln when I lost control at 50mph. Back end of the car was sliding across the lane of oncoming traffic (mid-day with plenty of traffic). Within a short time I went backwards off the road into a snowfilled ditch. I had two friends in the car, and we were all thankful that no one got hurt, and the car had no damage. Also, I did a 360 from a stop and stopped a few inched short of hitting a light pole. And I ended up travelling sideways along a bridge at about 45mph. No damage no injuries. Thankfully, yet again. So it's good to hear that your and yours are ok, and that your MM managed to cheat fate. Take care.
