Hello all,

I have 4 Eclipse 5 x 7s installed in my car. The install tech told me 5X7's were the best for for the car. Well after looking around, I saw that rear deck should be 6 x 9 and front should be 6 x 8. This did not make me happy as it seems they gave me some cheapo deal. Well, I want to change the backs to 6 x 9's and the fronts as well too...if possible. Can a 6x9 fit in the fronts without too much work? 6 x 9's should fit in the back no problem right?

Finally, what are all you guys running out there. Here is what im looking for, I want speakers that will be crisp, clear sounding, and loud. I like turning up my music loud and would like a speaker that wont be some piece of junk. Just want some feedback.

I was thinking maybe Rockford Fosgate P1682S for the fronts...?

and Pioneer TS-A6991R or Pioneer TS-D691R maybe for the backs?

The only thing I had with the TSD691R is that it is only a 2 way while the pioneer tsa6991R is a 5 way. Dont you get better sound from a 5 way speaker?

Are you sure its not 6X8? 6X8 speakers fit in a 5X7 spot which panthers come with stock.

I ordered Pioneer TS-A6881R (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-kOBUgoqXjSN/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?showAll=N&g=52200&i=130TSA6881&c=3&tp=92) for the fronts of my car.

Yea the eclipse speakers I have are 5x7 as they are indicated on the box. 6x8 speakers are larger. I do not agree with this hoopla about 5x7 and 6x8 being the same. If you have a speaker that is supposed to be 6x8, then it's 6x8, not 5x7. But, Just seemed like I may be able to get a 6x9 in the back, but oh well. Ill see what I can do.

They are the same, in that the mounting screw holes are the same (overlapping) pattern. Of course, the cones are a different size.

You will never ever ever get the sound out of 5x7's that you get from 6x8's if the hole is for 6x8. Period.

Why?

For any type of low response (300 Hz and lower and our crossover goes down to 100), the rear pressure wave needs to be isolated from the front pressure wave.

When one puts a 5x7 in a 6x8 hole, there's a gap left. Now the front wave is free to mix with the back wave causing cancellation and distortion.

On multi-way speakers....
Find a good quality 6x8 CO-axial speaker with a 12 db crossover. Just 12. Not 6, not 18. This is not a case of more is better. Each 6 db puts the next speaker 90 degrees off phase. If the crossover is 12db, then that's 180 off phase. Easily correctable by reversing the leads to the tweeter (which the manufacturer has done). A good quality coaxial will ALWAYS sound better than a 3, 4, or 5 way due to this phasing. I have never seen a multi way speaker with anything more than a 6db crossover and cheap tinny tweeters. This will cause a very harsh sound. Couple that harshness with our 'hard' (sound reflective, not absorbent) interior and you'll give yourself a headache.

Bottom line... same advice as ever... 12 db CO-axial 6x8 with a soft type tweeter (silk dome, cloth dome - not mylar or plastic). The best I've ever heard in our cars is the Pioneer TS-D681R. The new TS-D802P looks like a winner.

TS-G6841R is an excellent replacement if and only if it is used with factory radio power and the factory deck will ALWAYS be used to power them.

I'm confused now.

Again.

What size are the front door speakers? 6.5 or 6x8?

Rear speakers are 6x9 or 6x8?

Do you run the speakers through the headunit or through a seperate amp?

The door cut-outs & the rear deck cut-outs are 6"x8", which have the same hole mount pattern as 5"x7".

Not entirely true.

To clarify, the cut out is indeed 6x8. Many 5x7 speaker manufacturers add 'tabs' to 5x7's to reach the screw holes for 6x8, but I have never seen a 5x7 SEAL in a 6x8 hole.

Get 6x8's.

OK, slightly confused now, what is the difference between TSD801P and TSD681R? They look exactly the same in pictures...?

Pioneer line vs Pioneer Premier line.

On most products, the difference is Warranty period on some, there are a few feature or power differences also.
For these, the difference would be warranty as I can find no other differences.

Of note: Premier is a line designated only to authorized dealers. Therefore, if you don't buy from a Premier dealer, your extra warranty is bunko.

I wouldn't. I know of a member who has already replaced them due to experiencing exactly what I described above.

The TSD 801P have a Kevlar cone and a silk soft dome tweeter plus a butyl rubber surround. They are a very smooth sounding speaker and do not have the harsh sound that the others have. They also have a better crossover. You get what you pay for!

That's right! Silk on the Premier vs Polyester on the Pioneer. John's reply made me look again...

If I change, is will be to the 802P with the basalt fiber cone. That speaker 'ROCKS'!!

I have Infinity Reference 6x8's that are not made any longer. They sound fantastic and play loud enough for me (93db/1W). I did need to cut away some insulation for a perfect fit. Others did not have to do that. I bought these as I plan on keeping the OEM system. 1st time I've done that, ever...

Read the components in my signature. I love my system. Deep rich sound. Amazing. I wouldn't do anything different.

Matt, You have a yellowtop battery too? How did you secure your battery? Its quite a different size. Just wondering as mine doesnt seem to fit the best in the battery holder.
