Why is the title rebuilt?

Apparently there is a new game in town that if your car is wrecked and you don't want it repaired the insurance company cuts you a check and they(ins. co.) the sell the car for salvage. The Marauder I just bought was sold the same way. This car was hit in the left rear quarter panel while it was parked. It had 29k on it and I have had it about 3 yrs. I had the whole rear sheet metal replaced from the left rear door(quart. panel), trunk area, trunk lid, bumper brace and bumper. It will make someone a great daily driver. I don't need 4 cars. Well I do but my wife doesn't think so.

Ins. Co. will only cut you a check if it is totaled and may sell it to the owner for salvage cost. A vehicle with a salvage title has little value IMO.
If not totaled they have the right to repair it.

I'm now being told by an agent that if the repairs exceed 55-65% of the value of the car then its totaled. If that is the case then it won't take much to total any car in the $10,000 bracket when you consider airbags and new OEM parts.
