View Full Version : Looking at a 03-04 cobra maf

OK, thinking about getting a used cobra maf sensor on the cheap to mate up with the JLT RAI/CAI which I'll be acquiring soon. And after doing the leg work with the search button  , I got two things:

1) it won't help me unless I get in the S/C or 400hp range, which I'll probably never see as I'd more likely than not stay N/A. (though one ore two said they might have gotten a blip.)

2) There's no IAT sensor that'll make my comp go into failure mood and mean more money to buy one which makes the buy pointless as I'd need to get one or maybe buy a tune which I'm not ready to get yet.

3) JLT Intakes now are able to take the 90mm MAFS as well as the stock one.

4) I should probably go for a PHP intake spacer while I'm messing with the intake.

(And am I odd for wanting to do mods in twos? Possibly a bad thing? ie not being able to figure diagnose a problem if one arises)

So, what I'm asking is are my findings correct or will I be mounting stock to my shiny JLT?

P.S.
Woo , my first post in the garage. Now give the new guy a cookie for coming to class with his hw. :D

Answers, as I know them:

1) Not really a true statement, with a tune you'll see gains. You are potentially flowing more air with the MAF, therefore you can add more fuel = more power.

2) True, no IAT in the Cobra MAF. 2 options. 1 re-use the MAF sensor from your current (fits in the same way), or 2 drill a hole and insert one (IAT) in your cold air tube. Pretty common IAT sensor, any Ford without the IAT built in the MAF will do. Most 4 cyl. are this way. Make sure you seal the insert if you go this route.

3) True, with a much cooler looking fitting.

4) YES!! Spacer is an often overlooked mod with good mid-range results.

(And am I odd for wanting to do mods in twos? No, you're probably odd for other reasons. Possibly a bad thing? I find nothing wrong with being odd, so no it's not a bad thing. ie not being able to figure diagnose a problem if one arises? This really has nothing to do with being odd.)

So, what I'm asking is are my findings correct or will I be mounting stock to my shiny JLT? Your findings are correct, as far as being odd. Now live with it. The choice is yours on the MAF. Either way you go you'll need a tune to optimise results. If you go with the 90mm (Cobra) you will definately get a CEL for overlean, and have a case of lean fuel knock. With the stock size, you may or may not get the CEL.

My advice: Get the Cobra MAF housing, swap your MAF sensor into it, install and tune for it, the start planning your next pair of mods.

I have a brandy new Lightning MAF for CHEAP if'n you want it. The add-on splice-in IAT is cheap, too. Just poke a hole in the rubber elbow of the JLT and pop it in.

Yep, about $1 at any salvage yard, or spring $4 for new.

Indeed, there's half the reason why I'm considering a 90mm MAF, to replace the stock as the JLT which always looks pinched off at the MAF and I think the cobra will solve that. (the second that I've found one on the super cheap)

And so, to solve the IAT prob, I can just swap in the guts of the stock one by unscrewing the top part off and screwing it in the new one, correct? (I'm just not a fan of poking holes as air always finds its way to seep through my handiwork despite efforts to seal them)

Also, I think I've settled on my next mods on being a set of steeda UD pulleys and a Stewart WP :banana2:

And PM sent Magindat

Correct. If you're getting near 100K miles, just buy a new one.

Get the u/d's and a tune. You'll be happy.

no where near, just broke 29K a few days ago.

Click on map near you. Look for in house dyno.

Closest zip code I know is Norwich Ct.

You may want to pm a few guys here in your area and find out where they've gone. While hand held tuners and re-flashes are good (vendors here do them) nothing beats a dyno tune. I would say, but don't quote me on this, that $400 should get you done. As for the under drive pulleys, again vendors are here, and these are pretty common items at speedshops, or FRS dealers in your area. When you get them, throw away the alt. pulley as you don't need it.
