And it came from my MM! I remote started her this morn b4 work...the norm. I went to the door to see how it felt outside...the norm. I heard this noise of a Banshee!!! The MM squeaked a lil when I didnt drive her and it got cold that night til morn, but today was a HORRIBLE noise. I drove her to warm her up some more, the noise died down a little...I finally got to work and the noise was faint, I popped the hood....normal closed it and the noise stop...ANY IDEAS

The noise went away after you opened/closed the hood? Put a dab of grease on the rubber caps of the hood supports. There's a few threads around here about horrible squeeking sounds coming from under the hood and this is usually all it takes to get rid of them.

I hear an UGLY noise every morning too. Usually, it is the wife saying ... "Turn that *&%#$" alarm clock off". ;) Other noises are the grinding and groaning of me rolling out of bed.

In order to pinpoint your problem more closely ... you have to give us more to go on than "a horrible" noise. Was it a squeal, a squeak, a pop, thunk, grrrrrr, bang, ...... etc.

LoL....But the noise was a grindin/high pitched/squeal...I guess thats the best I can describe it...OR the noise a banshee makes?

Sounds like a FEAD issue (Front End Accessory Drive)...

Tensioner/Idler Pulley/Belt related...

...or maybe the neighbour's cat was under there when you started the motor...

Check your power steering fluid and tensioner/ pulleys.

Back in the 70's Ford products had tensioner pulleys on air conditioned cars)that would go bad after a few years.I'm not sure about the life span of the new tensioners but they can and usually did make a racket when the old ones went bad.it'd be nice to have a grease nipple on the tensioners, along with the u joints and suspension parts, but I suppose people would over lube the tensioners and have a nicely greased belt. Loosen up the serpentine belt and spin the tensioner by hand,it should spin freely and smoothly,if it feels rough or gritty that's probably your problem.

If these things have gone bad would the car continue to make this noise or does it come and go b/c by the time I got home from work the noise stopped?

If you just went over 1000,000 Its your belt... I shoped my patrol vehicle (2001 crown vic) for the same thing, and it was my belt and they replaced the water pump

for a while i had a very loud squeal at start up that died down after a little driving.........it was a leaky power steering unit...may not be the case for you but it sounds like something in your serpentine belt drive

Any smoke with the squeak?

As everyone else has said check everything.

But

Since you have a remote start, pop the hood and have a good look when you start it up again. You might be able to pin point the trouble better.

I had the tension-pulley start to squeak on my black. Hitting the front of it with some WD-40 would shut it up temporarily -- but you'd want to get it fixed because if it seizes, you're gonna be walkin' home!

Im going to go with the hood squeak. Mine was extremely loud to the point that it sounded like a main bearing without oil. Trying adjusting them first then start looking at the belt tensioner and belt. I had to replace my tensioner at 26K miles. Its very common.

Agree with posted suggestions as well. You did not mention whether the noise altered w/ rpms or not? If so, the alternator could be another candidate to add to your list. Just a thought...

Ok to try and clear this up for a better diagnosis. 1. The noise was after not driving her car after a chilly night. 2. The noise was a shrieking shrilling belt noise. 3. It stopped later that day after driving it. 4. It was loud during idle then subtle during driving. I hope that make for a better description. Thanks Guys!

I'm in the same boat. Check out my thread on the topic here:

I still have not found the fix.

I'm still under ESP. I just know that the dealer will somehow say that they couldn't repeat the noise. One day, I will just try repacing item by item (belt, pulleys, ec).

Ah, now I know what it could be. Mine did the same thing. It started out making noise on cold start-ups and would go away after it warmed up. Eventually, it didn't go away. My mech lives less than a mile from my house so I drove it up to him and he checked it with his stethoscope while it was still "shrieking".
It was the belt tensioner.

Was the tensioner bad or just needed to be tweaked?
