View Full Version : What Tires Do Members Suggest?

:cool:Got 37 K out of original tires and went with the BF Goodrich KDW2s for replacements since I had a terrible time trying to get larger same tires for the rear. I have 44 K on these and they are the noisiest tires on the planet. Tread still left but I can't take the noise anymore. Sounds like I'm driving a truck! November 2007 Edition of Consumer Reports gives them a black circle for noise (lowest rating). I am totally through with BF Goodrich tires. Consumer Reports recommends the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3. Goodyear's web site indicates they come in sizes 235/50ZR18/101Y for the front and the same tire in size 255/55ZR18/109Y for the rear. I was wondering what tire brand and sizes are members buying or recommending now? Also, these are Maximum Performance Summer Tires and not all season tires. Can members give me their choices and what they paid for their tires and where they purchased them? I am in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Also, the original alignment specs were wrong. The Carfixers section of our website had recommendations on settings for alignment. I had that done when I had the KDW2s put on and tires wore really even for about 30 K and then inside edge started wearing. Are members using Carfixer recommendation or factory settings for alignment when they buy tires other than BF Goodrich? That is, was the Carfixer recommendation just suggested for the BF Goodrich tires only?

The Carfixer specs are factory specs, just targeted more narrowly. They are within factory range. The OE alignment tended to be towards the outside edge of the range. These cars are going to wear the edges because of the suspension geometry. Ford set this car up to corner the best they could despite its massive size and weight. Your alignment is probably as good as it is going to get since you had it redone.

Some members are using Hankook SUV tires.
I have the KDW2 and I don't notice the "noise", my Marauder is a performance vehicle and the engine makes sweet music.
I bought them from Tire Rack.

Use Nitto 420S. Very quiet due to tread pattern, SUV side wall strength and great wear (I got over 30K including track days and 1/4 miles w/burnouts).
Don't second guess. Just do it.
Hankook and Proxes are noisier. I know this first hand.

555's
Combo works great. I had less understeer at the track than the lowered cobra the instructor was driving.

I have used both the Nitto's and KDWS's. I recommend the KDWS's for year-round. The Nitto's slide too easily in wet conditions!

If you don't hear noise you must play your radio awfully loud or have really loud mufflers. Even Consumer Reports noted the loudness. Also, my mechanic noticed it and asked how I could stand it. I've noticed its gotten worse with tire wear. Nonetheless, I really appreciate you getting back to me.

Not only have I not noticed the noise no one has ever commented. I have had them for over 3 years.
It maybe that we are on different driving surfaces. Are the roads diamond cut?

Thanx dude. And trust me on the tires. They are better wet and dry. Quiter and wear longer. Just flat out a better tire. Take it from a guy with 4 kids that ride in the car...
I love the hobby and these folks are considered friends. I do what I can to keep the hobby alive...
I highly recommend the GS-D3's. They're insanely sticky and one of the best rated wet traction tires on the market. After a five second burnout, I can launch nearly off stall (~3k), hook, and cut low 1.9 60's. This is with a 3500 stall TC and 4:10 gears on an NA car. With other tires, I've had problems ranging from high-speed instability to absolutely terrible lateral, straight-line, and wet traction.
Here are the specs on Tire Rack.
I highly recommend the GS-D3's.
And I can second that recommendation. I've gone through two sets of the Pirellis Kenny Brown starts with on his conversions (22K each - yuck!), and I just adore these F1s. Better cornering, and way more traction in the rain. Plus - pretty quiet tire as well. Although Tire Rack's got 'em, my local Goodyear store equaled the price, threw in installation, and I didn't have to pay shipping. They also offered to take 'em back if I didn't like 'em. I've always been a Goodyear guy, so this didn't take too much convincing. Maybe give your local store a shot at the deal?

I had researched these as my next set, but couldn't find a low enough cost. They are rated very highly.
