View Full Version : Does this sound like a fried Alternator?

I started the car today and the dash lights were slightly dim. As I drove away from home I noticed the battery light was on and the voltmeter read exactly 12v. I have installed an real Autometer volt gauge and it always reads just over 14v so I figure it's right. I drove back home and parked the car and rented one to get to work (PIA!!!). I did not take the time to check the voltage at the battery when it was running but I have no reason not to believe the gauge. In driving the 2 miles or so to loop back home, the voltage dropped slightly below 12.

It seems to me that the alternator is not functioning and the car was running on battery only. Is there any other explanation?

Thanks!

Get out a voltmeter and let it tell you if its bad.

The alternator and battery tested fine. I just got the car back from some left front accident repair and I suspect that a wire harness is shorted. I don't recall hearing the air suspension pump in awhile so I wonder if the cause lies there... Putting it back together and taking it back to the dealership who repaired it tonight.
