View Full Version : More Proof That Ford Sucks

The past few days I've noticed a few drops of coolant on the garage floor. I figured it must be a leaky hose or something simple since I replaced my radiator last June.
Took the car to the dealer and guess what? Leaking radiator. Of course, I have more than 12,000 miles on it so it's out of warranty and I have to pay for the new one.
Does Ford make anything that doesn't self destruct?
Anyone want to buy a MM?

Find the row it is leaking from and crimp it shut.
It works!

My '95 Mustang GTS had coolant seppage from the side tank for years. The following owner didn't replace radiator until the next owner bought it 3 years later.

I just wonder how many more things can go wrong? I've had my car a little over 5 years, almost 120K on the clock, 3 engines, 3 radiators, what's next?
I have dealer records to prove how regularly I've maintained the car, and I know that I drive it hard a lot less than a lot of guys here. It starts to get frustrating (and costly) after awhile.

Ross,
Have you dealt with the same dealer for all of your work/radiator work? If so, was there a compromise that could be had that might satisfy both parties (like you buy the radiator + coolant and they eat the labor)?

This is a possibilty from my boss at the Ford dealer where I work at.

And one I would try for. I've got almost 70K and over 50 passes down the 1320 and havn't had to replace anything but fluids.

The dealer did charge me a discounted price for the radiator, and that was nice of him, but the point remains that stuff keeps breaking on this car, unlike any car I have ever owned.

You sure take a beating. I would have sold that car a long, long time ago. Sometimes you just get a bad apple, no matter what manufacturer. I couldn't put up with that kind of crap

This is not meant as a dig against all dealers, but maybe your dealer sucks? You do seem to have had a disproportionate amount of trouble.

We bought Phoebe third-hand with 87,000 miles and she's now at something like 98,000. No major problems, at least none for the previous owner or us...

Actually, I've used two dealers. The first was a LM dealer, and then I started going to a Ford dealer who was the SVO shop in town. Some of my problems happened at each, so I just have a really bad taste in my mouth about the whole deal.
I guess people who have had good luck with Fords for a long time can't understand it, but this is my first Ford and it's just been trouble.

You win some, you lose some. I know a lot of people who have crap luck with one model and a few others with the same type of car are still trouble free, it's pretty much the luck of the draw.

The most costly repair for my car has been replacing the radiator fan assy. (shroud and fan). At first I thought it was a joke $651.xx for just a fan, then I learned it was all one piece which was $400 something and $200 something in labor, I'm just thankful the dealer had the part in stock and was able to do it so quickly cause I was no where near my home.

I could only begin to imagen what you think and how you feel with the stuff that has happened so far.

Maybe you should look into getting a Griffin radiator from Reinhart and see if you can tackle it yourself and get some help from fellow TX members to swap it in.

I have had lemons of several makes. Sometimes it just happens, and when it does it's very frustrating! That is when I historically move on and buy another car... that part is up to you.

Understand how you feel, Ross. :( I had a similar experience with an '89 Buick Regal. That car seemed to be in the repair shop more than it was on the road. ECM burned out 3 times. Nearly every part on the car was replaced ... one at a time for a period of 3 years. When the DRIVER DOOR fell off ... I had it. I've been a FORD man ever since and have never given GM another look. That was 16 years ago and the bad taste is still in my mouth. I have had very good experiences with every Ford (and only Fords and Mercurys) that I have owned in that time.
