I've been looking and haven't been able to find the thread from long ago about issues with the stock subwoofer. Does anyone recall where the thread might be,what the issues and symptoms were? Also were any of the 2004's affected? I seem to recall something about removing some baffling or something that was left in thru carelessness at the factory.

Mine's been rattling some too so that's why I'm asking.
I have thought of replacing it with this later this year, does anybody have any experience with it? I like sharp, clean crisp bass, not the dirty crap like the rice boys with their rap crap.

"what are you trying to listen to country crap?"
I listen to everything from Classical to Swing to Oldies to Acid Rock AND some Country
It ain't so much the type of music,I just don't like the gang bangers and wannabe gang bangers that sit in the afternoon traffic in front of my crib blaring their cheap systems with bass that sounds crummy cause their whole car rattles and rattles my windows, they don't impress me.
Mongoose,Thanks for the info.:coolman:

Is there an aftermarket sub that will fit back there where the factory one is? I was told NO!

I looked into this when I first got my MM.. The rattle I found was coming from the Package tray itself.. I had to shim where it meets the rear glass to keep it from rattling..much better now.. and ya its the stock sub.. I even left the foam on it..

Whoever told you it was not possible is obviously not talented or equipped to help you! Of course it is possible and is EASY for a talented installer! PM Kenny of John and they can help you get some great ideas! BTW I have two tens in my trunk up on the package shelf and I love them! Clean tight bass that sounds great in and is virtually silent outside the car...unless you open the windows! Lots of sound deadening material also helps knock out rattles...go talk to reputable shop for better advice! The guys on here in the biz(John and Kenny) are experts here!

If the problem is the mastic issue, the easiest fix is to remove the spare tire, unbolt the sub, reach up into the opening and pull out the pre-cut mastic. Took me 14 minutes to do and that was after the dealer had already replaced the sub under warranty.

My subwoofer always sounded muffled. I was upset at the sound of a supposedly higher-end unit. Did what was suggested here: removed the spare tire and trunk organizer and dropped the sub. Found the foam cutout still left on top of the speaker and removed it. Took the woofer box apart and drilled a 2" diameter hole and installed a 3" long port I got from JC Whitney's I think. First drilled the hole too small, but cleaned it up with a rasp and got the port installed correctly. (Didn't account for the ribbed plastic at the base of the port. Now fits very tight.

Reinstalled the SW and it sounds far, far better. Deep bases and a good thump. Be careful when you reinstall the assy, as you have to play with the screws a bit to get it up and tight. I didn't do it right the first time and there was some minor rattle that I fixed.

Personally with this mod I think the factory SW is great, but then I'm no audiophile fanatic type. Just rock and roll and it sounds good to me.
