View Full Version : EvenFlow (Post #2)

Im baffled by this, I really am!

I installed the even flow and a 180 stat at the same time.
After the install, my cruising temps dropped to an average of 168-179 from 191-197
At idle, not moving, the temp rose to 195, the cooling fan kicked on, dropped to 180 and the process repeated.

I was not sleeping soundly over this, so I swapped the t-stat with another 180* stat tonight....Same thing!
At this point I am questioning the ScanGaugeII, and the temp sensor on the passenger side of the crossover tube.
So I 'manually' tested everything....
As the scangauge read 170, i grabbed the lower radiator hose...ICE COLD.
I waited til the scan gauge read 180, then checked...HOT.
So this rules out the t-stat, Scangauge and sensor!

Is this kit so efficient the t-stat seldom opens? Granted its 13 degrees here, but that should not have this dramatic an impact on temps.

Im convinced and stumped at the same time   :D

You should be proud, you just sold me on this, my crusing temps are around 195-200 atm... looks like I know what my next mod is

I told you so.....

My temps are 175-185 cruising open road. I cycle a bit at idle from 180-190. it just never gets hot.

I was about 8 degrees higher before the EMP pump AND I DO have the DR rear cooling. 180 stat. 50/50 with 2x water wetter.

If you MOVE the water it WILL cool. That's just all there is to it.

Realization:
When cruising, my heater core is doing the work of the radiatior, cause the thermostat isnt even open

Is it still cold there? You using the heat? I'm talking FL temps. Cold here is 65!

Its 14 degrees here in Michigan Rich. Zack is not that far away.

Its 8 degrees here, im using the heat constantly.

I cant wait to see what the temps will be when it warms up.

Your thermostat will work more, but your temps won't get much higher if at all. I might use heat 2-3 times a year and only for the morning drive to work. Otherwise, that blend door is SHUT!

I think you're a bit on the high side Rich, cold down here is 57.

Zack, did you post a install thread on this mod?

I need more airflow due to fan thickness limitations on my car. But more water movement couldnt hurt either. Maybe this AND either the EMP or Mez water pump would help.

Post when you figure out how to get more airflow please, I have the same problem with the novi, I'm running 2 ultra-lite fans, but if it's hot out, the car will get pretty hot sitting in traffic, and I figure it's an air flow issue because as soon as speeds increase a bit the temps fall right back down.

I am a big believer that colder (to a point) is better. I thought I read our engines are designed to run at 195 wall temp for appropriate wear characteristics.

How does the cooler op. temps affect that?

If no ill effects, I will do this. I know my engine runs best before it gets to normal temp....

Todd, after speaking with the tech folks at EMP, you are beyond what a Mez can keep up with. A stewart will help you quite a bit.

I think the cooler temps are not as good as say 185-190, but I did this mod cause Im putting a Paxton on at the end of the month, so Ill re-evaluate after that.

As for install instructions, they come with the kit and I followed them to the letter. Pics are included.

You can always install a pusher fan on the condenser

Nice Idea! 2 pullers down low on the rad and 2 pushers up high on the condenser. Maybe 9 or 10 inch diameter?

Now, how to address variable speed??

I'm pretty sure I posted up pictures of my dual fan conversion for ProRauder... never runs hot and is run off an external variable-speed controller. Let me know if you can't find them.

Todd, make SURE you have a full shroud around all of your fans to cover the radiator. That is key.

I am going to do that. I have a high cfm electric fan that I had used on the radiator in the past, maybe 14inch I think, that is going in the front on the condenser. But I wanted more on the puller side as well.

I am working over a number of options now including custom radiators that sit approx 3 inches forward of stock to give space for higher flow fans and shroud (to TooManyFords point).

I am looking for your post. I will find it. But if you have a link, please post.

My biggest issue is the turbo sits in front of the engine. Between engine and radiator. Not the best place. I could have thought of a few better spots but I didnt design it so.... Oh well.

But I am down to under 3 inches clearance on much of the drivers side of the radiator for a fan. I have a flex-a-lite dual 10inch fan. Slimline. But low flow. It covers the entire top 2/3 of the radiator and has rubber gaskets all around but it just doesnt flow what we need for our cars. Much less with the work done and turbo sitting right there.

and to see more pictures, go here: http://www.cvmusclecars.com/gallery/search.php?c=3 and type in "fan" and click search. There are 6 total.

I'm under 3", but the key is to completely cover the radiator with the shroud. Otherwise the fans will pull air in from the engine side as that is the path of least resistance.

Remove the OEM trans cooler, cut off the ps cooler part and mount it on the frt sway.

Install a tranny cooler in front of the grill.

I've got another question, is that just a piece of alum you cut yourself? or did you buy it precut?

TooManyFords

Had it made at Griffin. When I got it, my friend came over and said, "So, how much you pay for that? I could do those for $xx.xx..." and it was about $150 less than what I paid. <grumble, grumble...>

It is tig welded plate aluminum so it pretty strong.

You can have metal done up like that at any HVAC shop.

That's what I like to hear, I have no shroud at all right now, this will be very helpfull indeed:D

Will this fan work?
Its kinda low profile, from a Taurus and popular with Fox Body Mustangs

no hot linking... PS are you gonna run a Novi 2000? it'll be good for you to know that the head unit is so big that the intake tube will be up against the radiator. So something to think about bracket wise, a diff bracket setup could solve this, but I don't have time or money to bother messing with it

Just make sure it is thick enough. That cheap thin stuff they make heating ducts out of won't cut it. I think mine is .125 (eighth) in thick.

Good idea. Did that already. I actually used a ps cooler from a cobra and mounted it elsewhere. So I dont have anything left between the radiator and condenser. Although that means I also lost those little flaps on the side that channel the air so it pulls through the condenser and not from around the radiator. So I will be putting something to take the place of those soon.

I do have the big tranny cooler from Dennis as well.

I have a 2 speed electric fan/shroud from a 5.0 L T-bird, that I am using to cool an EFI 327 Chevy. I run it on high only, ecu controlled. It looks identical to the fans you have (they are probably the same motor/blades just w/ slightly different shrouds). Those fans pull some serious air

Here it is:

What do you think the total thickness is on those fans Zack? At the motor lets say for worst case scenario.

I couldnt tell you, ive never had one in my possession.

I have a dual fan assembly at my moms from Flexalite ill pick up next time im over there.
Its REALLY thin

That may be the one I already have. It is about 2.25 thick IIRC. It only flows 2500cfm at zero static pressure. Our motors need more than that to stay cool in traffic on hotter days. OR for having a/c on.
