I was just wondering: you guys that have a full sized (rear wheel sized) spare. Did it come with a 5th polished MM rim, or just your basic steel POS rim? I have the mini spare on mine. (My car is a pre-decontented model with all the options as far as I know, but not the real tire spare.)

Trying to know what to expect from someone selling a full-sized MM spare.

Tnx!

The full-size spare is the 5 spoke rim, just not polished.

Mike.

It is a 5 star rim just like ours, only with a dull gray crappy finish and is the front tire size only... it works in the back though not a problem on the 300a... we have no TC

Nope. it's the same 18" forged rim as the marauder, just not polished and not cleared.

Yea i figured that out after a long thought process, mine is a mutt it was when they were moving over to the 300Bs and mine got the traction control unit at the factory. So i was wrong Early 300As dont some near the end may but no switch. As soon as i get the car out i take it over to the guy i bought it from so he can see and ill ask him if he had it installed but i believe its was just a mutt. ;)

Sorry, not true either.

It WILL work on the back, but problems are not with TC. Problem is with rotation speed difference between the 2 rear wheels and wear on the limited slip differential clutches.

If you have to use ANY spare besides a full size MATCHING rear tire, get it off ASAP to avoid smoking your LSD.

mutt. ;)
There were transitional cars known as 'decontented' which were the 300A parts running out and 300B parts starting to show on the line.

You know i asked Ford about that because i was mad that i could not rotate tires and brought up the spare and how it would hurt the LSD and they said it was not made to be put on forever but to make it to your nearest Mercury dealer, which is true, but i dont want it on the back at all.

Yes, well a 'full size' spare is still much better than a donut for your LSD, do you agree? I was always taught to get the spare off regardless of make / model as soon as possible. I see people all the time that drive around on those donuts!

Generally, true. Donuts are not made for long term use (obviously). 300A full size spare is a REAL tire and is correct for the front.

The closer you can get in diameter to the other side, the better it is for the LSD. The larger difference > more clutch slippage > more heat > more wear.

I carry a donut, a plug kit, a can of fix a flat, and an inflater. I'll do everything I can on the side of the road to keep from having to use that donut....

I may Slime my new tires.... I need to ask my tire guys about that. After all - it IS green!!!!

My MM came used and missing the donut spare. I got a damaged original rim with a rear sized tire as my spare.

That's actually best!

I actually sold my full size spare and bought a donut to accommodate my designs for the trunk....

So what if Brian were to get a flat in the front now? Would that have any ill effect? Does it go both ways?

I believe in having a full size spare in my vehicles. BTW, my spare on the front will probably pull and shimmy at the same time. I am just guessing this because I never had to use it as of yet. It came off of the left front of my MM when it got damaged by the original owner. See my gallery pics.

There would be steering issues and, if used long term, alignment issues.

Getting it there to be fixed would be better this way since you can correct for it with careful driving rather than destroying the diff on the way no matter what you do.

I wonder what i does for the ABS???? The ABS is looking for the correct tire size. I would check before i smoked an ABS module by having a full size spare thats was made for the back

Pull, probly. Shimmy? Maybe, but only if your alignment has too much toe in it.

Who cares, though. I'd rather creep with a shimmy than know my diff is back there begging for mercy!!!

But the MM doesn't talk back and is ALWAYS there for you if you take care of her!!!!

The key is to look for a woman who is as good to you, rewards your efforts and caretaking, and shows you as good a time as your MM!!!!

I know of a couple of us that have 'em!!!!

I'd say some are lucky, but for me... I went through several before this one. I was not lucky, I was DUE!!! But still lucky.

Bought a full size spare off another mm.net member, funny thing is I just don't carry it with me now nor did I ever carry the donut with me lol. Once the OEM wheels go back on I'm going to find the cheapest 255/55-18 tire I can and put it on the full size spare rim and carry the donut so if need be I can replace any of the tires.

Will a full size rear tire on the OEM rim fit on the shelf in the trunk? Cause I bought a OEM rim and need to stick a tire on it....

I've had mine for a long time and it came from a 1988 Cougar. I just transferred it from car to car like my four lug wrench. It does not cover it fully either but it is better than nothing. I also found a full cover from a totalled CV with the full size spare. That one is held on with a bungy cord.

Wow, You are handy.... Console covers, Spare tire covers.

Right now it has a front tire on it.

I need to get my Wife to make up a liner for the inside of the trunk lid. I picked up several remnants of upholstry fabric that would look good in there. Maybe some day...

If done in diamond plate, It could do double duty as a keg cooler.

Oddly enough, my mini spare came with a full size tire cover....

I'd make it out of matching trunk liner. I suppose they could be embroidered, but I've never tried that material with my embroidery friend.

You're talking some serious coin. Upwards of $200, probly.

Man, this site is great. I never gave this any thought at all. I'm using a lot of the trunk. I think what I'll do is if I have a front tire blowout is mount the donut and creep to the tire shop. If I have a rear tire flat, I'm still going to mount the donut on the front, and put the front on the back and creep to the tire shop. The front spare has got to be better for the LSD.

I have 255/55's on the back and a full sized one of those would take up too much space in my trunk anyway. And a can of fix a flat is in the works. Should have thought of that first...

Thanks for all the great info.

There were transitional cars known as 'decontented' which were the 300A parts running out and 300B parts starting to show on the line.

Actually de-contenting started after the 300Bs first went into production. The first 300Bs, until sometime in Nov '03 have everything the 300A's have with the addition of TC, but with the 'mini' 18" spare.

I'm not convinced the Marauder was originally supposed to be decontented, but all cars at STAP ended up being. The original announcement, which I can't find now, seemed to indicate the Marauder wouldn't be.

The TCs weren't decontented
