View Full Version : Clunking noise behind the A/C Unit..... ?

A/C works fine... and turns off with the normal noises.

But now when I turn it on.... there is a really loud clunking noise coming from behind it. Any ideas?

Yep mine does it every time it engages. Sounds like someone slamming a door.

Every once in awhile my crown vic will do that but it works fine.

There are shims behind the clutch plate that can be removed one at a time to "tighten" the gap and minimize the slap you hear when the clutch engages!!!:beer: There is a special tool used to hold the clutch while you remove the center bolt holding it....I rented it from AutoZone!!:bows:

Minimizing the gap will also help minimize wear when the plate engages!!:cool:

Give it a try....it's easy and you might be pleasantly surprised!!:D

Are you guys talking about the belt driven A/C Compressor on the engine?

That is not what I'm talking about. I know that makes more noise than I'm used to also.... but I know that's normal.

This noise seriously sounds it's coming from under the dash right behind the oil/volt gauges. Sounds like someone is punching 200 sheets of notebook paper. Loud.

Not the A/C Compressor.

We have air conditioning? or are you talking about alternating current? All I use is HEAT!!

That's the doors (forgot what it's called) that mix outside air with A/C air to get the cabin temp you want...It's normal...

And when I say loud.... I mean... I can hear it over the music, even when it's turned way up.

It may be sticking and when the vacuum gets low enough like 15 MM of Hg, it may break loose. Usually they move slowly as vacuum evacuates the air motor. You should be able to watch the arm... When the noise happens you should be able to feel a drastic change in the temp of the air coming thru the vents
