Sure it's a knock and not an exhaust rattle? Maybe something else bolted to the motor that tightens up with heat?

Sometimes when I start my car the Idler pulley chatters a little until it gets warm, Im pretty sure my bearing is shot...you could have the same problem:confused:

Sounds stupid but if you take a few feet of heater hose and probe around the motor with it like a stethoscope you may be able to pinpoint its location. Richy

Timing chain tensioners clatter until oil pressure is up.....sounds like rod knocking!!!:argue:
Aluminum motors make a lot of strange sounds.....If it runs OK just keep going!!

Mine does it everyday, nothing to worry about

superford, I have 2 questions for your friend:
1. Does his car have the fake OEM oil pressure gauge or a real working one?
2. What brand of oil filter is he using?

RF are you thinking that a non-OEM oil filter (without drain back valve) might lead to start up noise?

superford, you don't list a location in your profile, but if it's anywhere cold, tell your friend to try changing his filter to a Motorcraft FL-820S. Also be sure he's not using 10W-xx oil...the modular motors like 5W-20 and 5W-30 only.
If he's in southern Florida, then disregard the above... :D

Cool beans. I always like knowing what is making a noise rather than assuming "it's normal, ignore it".

I think the "guide" you speak of is the "tensioner" I referred to in post #6??
I used to get a serious knock on start up after an oil change.....the dry filter had to fill!!:argue: I thought it was a rod knocking until a tech told me it was the tensioners and not to worry!!
I installed a remote filter kit and now can fill the filter with oil during an oil change.....thought it would eliminate the knocking.....nope!!
Been doing it for 165K mile and 35 or so oil changes.....STILL GOING STRONG!!!:bows:
