FREE ICE CREAM AND MILKSHAKES!!!

The weather is starting to get nice around here so it's time for another Bert's run. For anyone that has not been there, Bert's is a 50's style restaurant that serves food, ice cream and great milk shakes and malts.

Last year's meet was one of our largest CAM meets ever, we had 32 cars. As a way of saying thank you to the CAM crew for hosting last year's MV5, Mary and the owners of the MMnet have provided us with gift cards that we will use to pay for all the ice cream, milkshakes and malts for our CAM members attending the event. That includes new members that want to attend!

The date/time is driven by the restaraunt's ability to host our large group. It's scheduled for Sunday, April 20th, at 2pm at Bert's 50's Diner in Mechanicsville, MD, Route 5, Northbound Lane. Directions to follow.

My wife and I would so much love to be there, but we're in a holding pattern for now. Trying to save as much dough as possible until September, when will close on the biggest purchase of lives thus far, a brand new 4 bedroom 3 bath house with a two car garage on a half acre lot. Only about a ten minute drive to Historic Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Jamestown. Maybe I'll be able to play host for an event in this area later this year. We'll see!

What time would all this partake at? I mean unless my brother would be up to road tripping 3 hours back to NJ at night, we might "might" be able to go there earlier for an hour or two.

All, I passed through MD-5 and I-495 today and noticed a sign up about construction and road closures on April 19 and 20.

I hit the MD website and after some digging found a press release annoucning road closures on the evening of april 19th through the morning of April 20th - according to this the contract states closure permitted through 1pm on April 20th.

Looks like the closure is on I95 but will affect traffic on MD-5 in that area. I dont know if any exits will be closed or not...

I know many (including myself) travel this route to Bert's.

They've been working on this project since the first time I went to Bert's a few years ago...hasn't changed much in a few years either... *sigh*

http://www.sha.state.md.us/information/newsrel/oc/newstxt.asp?filename=08_04_10. 78.z

I-95 TRAFFIC ALERT

STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE I-95/I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) AT MD 5 (BRANCH AVENUE) ON SATURDAY NIGHT, APRIL 19 AND SUNDAY MORNING, APRIL 20

NEW DATE ANNOUNCED as Crews Set Steel for Bridge at I-95/MD 5 Interchange; I-95 to be Affected for up to 17 Hours; MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO AVOID THE AREA

(April 10, 2008) – On Saturday night, April 19, as part of the State Highway Administration’s (SHA) $52 million interchange project along MD 5 at I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway), SHA will begin setting structural steel for the southbound Capital Beltway flyover ramp to southbound MD 5 (Branch Avenue.) The steel placement will require a temporary closure of southbound I-95 for up to 14 hours and a temporary closure of northbound I-95 for up to twelve hours, weather permitting. The closures are necessary to ensure worker and motorist safety as 12 twenty-ton, curved steel beams are erected and bolted together directly over the travel lanes of I-95. In addition, five massive cranes needed to lift the beams will be on the I-95 travel lanes, necessitating the total road closures.

SOUTHBOUND I-95 (INNER LOOP OF THE BELTWAY)

• Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, the contractor will begin closing lanes of southbound I-95, diverting traffic onto the two-lane ramp to Branch Avenue. Motorists will be detoured to a double-left turn onto Auth Road, across the MD 5 intersection and back to southbound I-95.
• Traffic signal timing will provide the maximum timing for the I-95 traffic being detoured. Major delays are expected along I-95, Auth Road and MD 5 in the area.
• Two lanes along southbound I-95 should re-open by 10 a.m. Sunday morning, though the contract does permit a total closure through 1 p.m. All lanes are expected to open by 1 p.m.

SOUTHBOUND MD 5 RAMP TO NORTHBOUND I-95

• SHA will also close the ramp from southbound MD 5 to northbound I-95 between 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
• Traffic will be diverted to the MD 5/MD 337 intersection to access northbound I-95.
• The ramp traffic must be detoured as the right shoulder along northbound I-95 will be used as a through lane, meaning ramp traffic would have no merge area.
• SHA suggests either MD 458 (Silver Hill Road) to MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) or MD 414 (Saint Barnabas Road), which both connect to I-95 as an alternate during the ramp closure.

NORTHBOUND I-95 (OUTER LOOP OF THE BELTWAY)

• SHA will close two left lanes of northbound I-95 beginning 8 p.m. Saturday night, April 19. Two right lanes will remain open.
• ALL LANES ALONG NORTHBOUND I-95 WILL CLOSE between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, April 20. Traffic will be diverted onto the ramp to southbound MD 5 (Branch Avenue) to MD 337 (Allentown Road) to the I-95/MD 337 interchange, where motorists can access northbound I-95.
• SHA and the contractor will do everything possible to re-open a single right lane along northbound I-95 by 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 20.
• All lanes along northbound I-95 should be open by 1 p.m. Sunday, April 20.

All lanes along both directions of I-95 and the southbound MD 5 ramp to northbound I-95 are expected to re-open to traffic by 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.

To avoid MAJOR delays, motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes. Motorists from the north traveling through the Washington region to points south are encouraged to use I-495 across the American Legion Bridge. Motorists from the east along US 50 should consider US 301 south, or continue along US 50 to MD 295, which turns into I-295 in Washington D.C. and connects back with I-95 near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Local traffic heading south along MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway), US 50 (John Hanson Highway), MD 214 (Central Avenue) and MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) should use MD 295 or US 50 to I-295 into Washington DC. I-295 connects with I-95 near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

SHA has coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation to use dynamic message signs (DMS) to alert motorists to the delays expected along northbound I-95 and divert through traffic along the west side of I-95/I-495.

SHA will use overhead DMS as well as additional static signs along southbound I-95 between the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) and Capital Beltway, southbound MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), westbound US 50 and along southbound I-95 in Prince George’s County.

The overall I-95/MD 5 project began in March 2006 and is expected to be completed by summer 2009, weather permitting. SHA’s contractor for the project is Cherry Hill Construction of Jessup.

Citizens who have questions about Branch Avenue, I-95/I-495 or any other State numbered roadway in Prince George’s county, please call SHA’s District 3 office toll free at 1-800-749-0737. SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.

There is a possibility of a Special Guest Appearance at the Bert's meet. A recent work schedule change may make it possible for an appearance by the S.O.B. It has been more than a year and a half that he has been available on a weekend to participate in Marauder CAM meets. Now all that he has to do is convince the "new wife" that he needs to be with the guys on his first Sunday off in 18 months. Lets see who wins this one.

Since you checked "Yes" in the I will definitely be there column in the poll, you cannot back out at this point. You will just have to tell your sister that she has a birthday every year and that you will do better next year. Get her a nice gift .... and then head off to the meet. ;)

What about Kclinger's in Hanover, PA, next month, and of course, Carlisle? We're on our way to Ohio, today or tomorrow, depending upon when the relief team arrives, from Madison, WI. :drive:

Thanks Chris, I'll pass your condolences along to Diane.

I am getting concerned about the weather reports. I usually ignor the weathermen around here because they rarely get it right for our neck of the woods. But, we had thunderstorms at around 4am this morning and they are expecting 1-3" of rain and heavy thunderstorms this afternoon. They are also calling for possible flooding. Several folks have backed out completely because of weather and various other plans and others are driving their hoopties. It may be shakey ride on the area roads today so for the safety of the members I'll through out the question to all.
Would you like to reschedule for Sunday, 27 April, 2pm? I'm heading to the airport and will be back around 1230-1300 so I won't be able to read responses until then. Some folks would already need to be on the road by then so if we have a consensus we'll either reschedule or go. I'm going either way.... not everyone will read this so I plan on going to Berts at 2pm for a late lunch and a milkshake.

I'll be on the road in a few minutes for the 2 1/2 hour ride to the airport. My cell: (240) 925-4133. If anyone would like to call (CAM area only please:D) and let me know if you are coming or going, or just want to share what's been posted, that would be great.

George and I made it home about an hour ago ( 5:50 PM). Very nice turnout at Bert's 50 Diner considering the weather. The drive down and back was wet; but weather held for about 15 minutes and we were able to gather in the parking lot. By my count, there were about 30 people there and a nice size MM conga line (~12 or so). Forgot my camera -- so I'll have to wait for George to send me what he has ---

Thanks gang it was another great gathering of the CAM folks.

Here's who braved the weather to join the crowd ....

I just made it back about 20min ago or so. We took the "scenic" route back after battling beltway traffic once. Went down to the 301 bridge across the potomac and up through Fredericksburg. Was a bit longer mileage-wise, but was a nicer drive.

I didn't get many pics I had planned to take more outside but the rain started so the camera went back in the car.

Davin and I made it home safely. Only about 5 miles of rain, the rest of the ride was clear. It's been a while for me and it was great to see everyone again! Chris, thanks for the intell, I'll start planning our time off for MV6. Diane has family in Huntington, WV at the halfway point. We may plan on spending a day there on the way back (TBD).

Glad you all got back OK, for those of you that came back up through Waldorf, they had a micro burst less that a mile off of Rte 5. A friend of mind called that lives in the area and this thing came through just a block or two away from his brothers place. They drove by Berts and saw you there. If I was in town on business, I would have stopped by. However, we're working on the house here in the Omaha area to put it on the market since we're moving West.

Yes, the F0 tornado went through Waldorf at about 2:35 PM. Bert's is about 17 miles south of Waldorf, MD on Route 5. We were inside Bert's diner just ordering our FREE ice cream and milkshakes at that time. :D Everyone is OK. Thanks for thinking of us.

There was also an F1 tornado that went through Chillum, MD at the same time. Chillum is just north of Washington, DC but still inside the I-495 Beltway. That one sucked the roof off of a private school. No one hurt.
