some times when i put my car (02 sport) into reverse it dies on me and the check engine light comes on, had happened 4-5 times in 4days. anyone know why this might be? most of the time i have been in park and went to reverse, seems maybe the belt loosens, (if thats possible?) or the rpms (no tack) go way down?

you have good gas? how does it run when its in park? and what about when you go into drive, does it ever die?

just from what you have told me it sounds like an idle air control valve

same place i always get gas (for years now), never dies in park or drive, i dont notice anything when i shift into drive and i dont notice anything in park or drive that seem odd, but now that you said that i will pay attention next time to make sure. i am some what knowledgeable, but i dont know what aidle air control valve is.

That also happened to me once in my Marauder, that was 4 or 5 months ago though and it hasn't happened since

Ditto on the IAC (idle air control) I have this from the '03 factory manual for replacement. It should be the same as your '02.
Very easy to change, and is common cause of stalling when shifting out of park.

do you know if there is any way to tell if it is bad, like the ay you can tell is a fuse is bad by looking at it? and thanks for the info.

go to the parts store get a new one put it in, if it dont fix the problem, take it back.

(if you friends with the parts people like i am)

i cant think of a real good way to check/test it/

oh yeah, now my rear diff is leaking pretty bad and my front drivers side shock/bushing is making soe crazy noise (just needs some lube i hope) . i ove this car, hopefully i will fix everything and it will be good for a while. 80K so i didnt expect a brand new car or anything.

Although it's not recommended, take it off and clean it with carb cleaner. What do you have to lose? At worse, it would stick wide open and cause you to run someone over or barrel down a cliff. If it fixes it you're ahead. If it changes the problem, you're on the right track.

Best luck,

J

ok, so an update. after posting, the car was fine until today when it died in drive. simply was stopping at a stop sign and it went dead. the battery light came on and the check engine light for a moment. then i put it in park and it started up. would this still be linked to the iac?

Re-set your PCM by disconnecting your negative battery terminal for a few minutes!! This should also re-set the adaptive learning feature and your idle should be higher until the A/L settles in??

If this doesn't work replace the IAC......they gum up and are almost impossible to clean!!!:argue: I have replaced mine several times to correct stalling problems!!:mad2:

you also have to disconnect the battery for 1/2 hr out whatever after doing the iac vavle so the car can relearn with the new one
