When I go WOT, my car makes a whining noise. Once I let off the gas, the whining noise continues for a few seconds before the noise goes away. My mods are in my sig and I also have a PHP intake spacer that I installed yesterday. I think it made the noise before the intake spacer was put on but I am not 100% sure. I went WOT after I installed the spacer to see if I could notice any SOTP difference. So does anyone know what it might be? It's hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

Alternator Pulley Clutch...
CHeck this THREAD (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=36063&highlight=alternator) (with sound) and I think you'll find you are not hearing anything
out of the ordinary.
HERE (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=35657&highlight=alternator) is another okay post on this...the message being if you aren't having electrical problems
you are just fine...

It could be the one way clutch in the alternator. If you have the early production '03 the alternator has a clutch in the drive pulley that allows the rotor to free-wheel when the engine decelerates. This usually happens and is most noticable when letting your foot off after a WOT run. You may also hear this right after you shut the engine off - especially after reving the engine up a little just before key-off.
It has the clutch to lessen accesory drive belt shock when driving in a "spirited fashion".

I'm sure your input is more valuable than mine over 90% of the time! :D
This was just one example where my n00b experience may have been worth something - so I hit the buzzer!!!
I know the first time I heard it I thought I spun a bearing on something (that is, if we're all talking the same thing here)...

Thanks for the help. That makes me feel better. I havent listened to the youtube video yet because I'm at work but I'll check it out when I get a chance. Based on what I have read, though, it sounds like this is the problem.

Notice any difference with the spacer on?

Honestly, no. I'm sure it added a few hp as advertised but it's hard to tell the difference when your talking only 4 or 5 hp.

Under WOT at higher RPMs the ignition system does make something of a whining noise, sorta similar to a supercharger whine. I notice it when the radio is off. I imagine eight very muscular little hamsters all jacked up on Mountain Dew spinning their wheel at close to the speed of light when I hear that noise.
That may be the noise you are speaking of.

This is more like the sound than that one in the link. Heard it when i went WOT after installing the spacer. Freaked me out the first time i heard it , but no ill affects. Don't know what the sound is but it sounds cool as opposed to determintal.
As far as performance with the spacer it seems there was a bit of decrease when nailing throtle from 45 as oppose to stock. I think could need a tune or adjustment, to get the full benefit since you are getting a bit more air in. I am still running the base DR tune, prior to spacer and few other mods.
