I changed the fuel filter on one of my Panthers tonight. At start up, the dreaded Check Engine light came on.

Plugged in the tuner and got:

P1235 - Fuel Pump Control Out of Range
(Fuel Pump Driver Module/VLCM)

How could a simple fuel filter change cause this code and what can remedy it?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe it tripped the 'out of range' code because the fuel pump had no backpressure on it while it was briefly filling the new, empty fuel filter.
Most pumps that are run with no backpressure draw more amps then they do when they run with some backpressure.

:dunno:

For what it's worth. I used a NAPA Gold filter and had to file down one of the plastic hose retaining clips for it to fit because an OEM one snapped. The fuel line is on snug and the clip is holding it in place without any leaks.

I'm baffeled as to the cause of the code.

Whoa. Unfortunately, that's way over my head.

I get to step KB31 and an then overwhelmed.

Is the Fuel Pump Driver Module the fancy term for Fuel Pump?

What Joe Walsh said. Clear the code and be done with it.

What Joe Walsh said. Clear the code and be done with it.

I did try, multiple times and it still pops up.

You know...you clear the code, take her for a drive. Park her, then check for codes with the reader, and sure enough....it's back. The CEL was even on when I fired her back up.

Surely there is a quick rememdy for this. I've been changing fuel filters for years and have never had this problem. :dunno:

Reinstalling it wouldn't help would it?

Does it harm the vehicle to drive it with this code?

Thanks again, everyone.

That code popping up after a filter change is common. It takes a couple of seconds for the pump to fill the void at a high duty-cycle and the PCM sees this as a problem. Once is common or typical, multiple times indicates a problem. Is there any leakage after shutting the engine off. Keep in mind fuel may evaporate and not puddle. You mentioned the issue with the retainer, is it (fuel) slowly seeping out of the filter and causing a similar situation each start-up? Park the car and recheck it 15 and 30 minutes after. It may help to wrap the filter in a rag after parking to hold the fuel. I assume it is cold and dry up there (KY) right now. Is it possible the filter is backwards and causing excessive back pressure and low flow?

To answer your questions:
Drive a different car until you figure out the issue.
The Driver Module (FPDM) controls the pump as the PCM tells it to. The PCM uses the fuel rail pressure sensor (FRPS) as input or, possibly in this case, feedback. Can you read the data for the FRPS with your whosehewhatsit? What does it read key on engine off and running? It should be in "psi" or "kPa".

You didn't specify what car and I haven't a clue what you have. But I can take blind stabs with the best of'em. You don't specify how long you ran the car or how long it was shut down between runs, either.

Best luck,

J

I just installed a Gt-40 pump and new filter (same filter as you), and had the exact same code come up...

Just disconnecting the battery will not erase the code...You need to erase via software...then it will be gone...

I think it threw a code cause I pulled the pump fuse...and turned the key to reduce fuel pressure in the lines...prior to install...

Good luck...

I called Diablo and they said that it is not in the tune. So, I'm back to square 1.

I'll do my best to use the tuner later to monitor the parameters JMan recommended.

However, I'd still like to know what can be done to remedy this code. I wish I had the technical savy to perform what Wchain posted.

All of this over a simple fuel filter replacement. :shake:

A buddy of mine changed his fuel filter and the same problem code came up. He cleared his codes and it never came back. I in turn changed my filter and before starting up the car I cycled the fuel pump by turning the key to the on position and then back off, a couple of times until the the fuel pressure was back up to par. Then I started the car and there were no codes. But we did both use a stock filter.

Can't you clear codes with the diablo?

I'll try that today and see what happens. Thanks.

I did clear it several times and even took the car for a short drive. Shut it off in a parking lot and then plugged in the tuner. Sure enough, the code was back.

I unhooked the battery lasnight for a few minutes so we'll see what happens when I fire it up today.

The last thing I want to do is to have to take it to a mechanic.

For what it's worth. I used a NAPA Gold filter.I installed a NAPA Gold in Phoebe when we got her, did the key dance, and didn't get a CEL...maybe your issue is something else entirely (and coincidentally)?
