I'm interested in hearing about the different engines used in Marauders over the course of production. This message comes from another tread of mine entitled "The Fat Lady sings".

This is a good question and I would like to start a survey to see how many members have different engine codes. My original engine code was something like this 3G-120-AA to be followed by another series of numbers. My new engine code is 3G-120-AB.

The engine code can be located on the value covers on both other sides of the heads. It usually is a white sticker. I will try to find out if the other smaller numbers are meaningful.

I have no ideeer...Is there any difference? Does it designate which supplier or factory they were built at? (351 'Cleavland' vs 'Windsor')

It’s my understanding that all Mercury Marauder engines were assembled at the Romeo engine Plant. What I am attempting to identify is the variations of the motor. For example, I have a different alternator part number, wiring harness, then my original motor. The question becomes, how my engine modifications were made to the original design, if any.

Mine is 3G-120-AB. Built 1/2003.

If a 3G-120-AA is associated with a 300A and 3G-120-AB equals 300B, then the question becomes what is the engine code of a 2004 Model.

One of the engine codes for the 2004 will be 4G-120-AA.

4 = 4th year
G = Decade (2000 - 2009)
120 = Marauder
AA = Revision level

The revision level gets bumped when ever the plant needs to differentiate between different assemblies. For example, maybe engineering releases a new water pump or alternator, and there are other changes (hose or wiring) that go along with it. As the engine moves down the line, the engine code tells the assemblers which bins to get various parts from. It doesn't always mean that there is some big difference in the two levels. If something get changed to fix some field issue, it may drive a new engine code.

There probably are not too many Marauder codes, but until the engine gets dressed, they need some way to tell them apart from the Mach 1's and the Aviators. The Engine code gets assigned to the block when it goes on the line.

So far I have found 3 engine number codes, are there any other codes?

3G-120-AA
3G-120-AB
3G-120-BB

The question is, what "changes" does each of those codes represent?
