View Full Version : Problem with my Accufab Throttle Body sticking

I'm trying to get my Accufab throttle body installed and keep having probelms when I install the throttle positioning sensor. The throttle works fine until I install the sensor. When it's tightened up the throttle sticks when I work the blades opened and closed.
JMan suggested an O-Ring to put between the TPS and the TB itself. I just got back from Advance Auto Parts with the O-Ring and that seemed to make it worse. So what's going on here?
Thanks for the help!!

I have an Accufab as well...
Check to see if your TPS is centered over the blade...If it is mis-aligned, it will push on the blade, causing binding...
Or perhaps you rotated the inside of the TPS, and now it is not centered in the sensor...Think of it like if you connected your steering wheel to the rack & pinion when the steering wheel was turned all the way to the right...You would be able to turn LEFT...but not Right...
Hope this helps...
BTW: loose the o-ring...you don't need it...

I should also mention that this is a replacement TPS that I bought at an O'Reilly's Auto Parts store.. I could not for the life of me get those damn screws off the old throttle body....
How should it be centered? The blade itself is kind of off-center. So when I put the TPS on, I have to slightly rotate it so the bolt holes line up...

Yea, you will need to rotate the TPS to get the holes to line up...But what that (rotation of TPS) does, is it changes the the angle of the sensor...which in turn changes the volt reading it sends to the ECM...Have you checked to see what your TPS is reading (volts) when installed? You should have .96 to .99 volts with the TB closed...You will probably (like me) have to drill out the holes in the TPS so that you can rotate enoung to get your volts in the correct range...

By centered...I mean that the TPS fits nicely into the hole in the TB...and not wedged up against one side...

I bought my Accufab TB during the last group buy.... Haven't had any issues whatsoever.
I just wish I could have gotten an oval TB instead.

+1 well over a year with zero issues.
Matt,
It's either the height of the shaft stub or the depth of the sensor that's inappropriate. I thought an 'O'ring would extend the space. For giggles and test purposes (Not on the car!), space the sensor with washers or some other spacer and tighten it down. See if the added clearance allows it to work freely. If so, the height/depth thing holds true. Then you have to choose whether to make a permanent spacer or try a Motorcraft TPS. Lastly, another remedy would be to grind down the shaft stub. I'd be more prone to modify the sensor mounting than mess with the integrity of the throttle shaft.
Best luck,
J

If the washer thing works, you could go to your local home store and buy a piece of aluminum of correct thickness and make a gasket.
Or you could just buy a Ford TPS.
I have had no issues whatsoever with my AF TB!!!
