Any idea's on this?

Last weekend i was driving my daily driver 02 crown vic sport on the highway to visit my parents & I heard & felt a thumping sound so I figure I have a flat tire. I pull over on the shoulder & find all tires are fine. I get back on the highway & the noise is gone. I haven't heard the noise for the past week so i didn't think about it again. Today when I went out to get lunch right before I got back home the noise starts again. It sounds & feels like it is coming from the rear of the car & yes all the tires are fine. Any idea's?

I think I might know, it was a temporary thumping noise that lasted one time until you got out of your car and checked the source, now its gone. Is that about right? Be careful of those.

I had snow melt and re-freeze on the inside of a rear rim once what did just what you are describing.
