God bless him for trying...

This is where we are at after 3 days of work. How do you get a Kooks header equipped engine out?

Taking it out through the top was shot down when the TQ bolts couldn't be removed as everything is locked up, the bellhousing bolts couldn't be reached because of the header, and the starter couldn't come out because of the header. So... it was decided to remove the entire engine/trans together by dropping the front crossmember and lifting the car off the drivetrain which is resting on jackstands. Well, the headers hit the frame and wouldn't fit so he took the passenger side header off but now, after using the Mk1 eyeball it is clear that the DOHC cylinder heads are wider than the frame which means it can't come out of the bottom. Now he believes he can get to all the bellhousing bolts so hopefully tomorrow the engine can be taken out through the top but its going to take a little finesse with not being able to get the TQ unbolted.

It looks ugly as sin but I swear I'm determined to see this thing through... I JUST WANT TO GET THE ENGINE OUT!!!!!!!!!

Hints, tips, advice??? PLEASE!!!

I will call Chris tonight he might have an idea or two. Good luck with the removal.

PM Zack, he had my KOOKS equipped siezed motor AND the torque converter attached out in like 2 hours or something rediculous like that.

Alone as well.

I unbolted the body from the frame and lifted it off with the engine in. It would be a piece of cake to remove the engine at that point....

Oh my god!

Both headers need to come off if the engine is locked.
.
Take the intake manifold off and get to the bellhousing bolts that way.

MAKE SURE the inspection plate is off the transmission before seperating the 2!

The engine need to be raised and both motor mounts need to come out (when the engine is locked)

Take the fan shroud off.
Lift engine and yank forward, making sure the transmission is raised with a jack as the engine itself rises.

Should take 2 hours or so to do all that :D

Thanks Zack, will let him know tomorrow and hopefully this thing will be out. I want to cry every time I walk back in the shop and see it there in pieces. The body can't come off because of the rollbar passing through the body to the frame... this has got to work!

Any tips on getting the left header off, he spent hours on the right side header basically hand wrenching it off an eighth of a turn at a time.

I'm getting a whole new respect for those crazy people willing to do this kind of stuff for a living and making it work.

The bottom of the header head flanges are slotted so those bolts only need to be loosened. The top bolts have to be removed and then you should be able to lift headers off the bottom bolts.

I installed and later removed the engine with headers and tranny attached one time. Never again. Pull both of the headers off. Engine and tranny will come out together easily. I'd rather pull the engine & tranny together.
