From what these guys found from random sampling, one would doubt these being isolated incidents.

That's why I do 98% of the maintenance and repairs on my cars.

I have seen mthis video before. This is why I do as much as I can myself, and then have a TRUSTED friend do the rest.

Good shops can be hard to find sometimes....

I too have seen this video before... I have never had my MM serviced at a Jiffy Lube but I have been using them for years on my other vehicles. Of the MANY MANY times I have had them service my vehicles, I have never sat in the waiting room. I watch over my cars and have conversation with the manager everytime. They now a sucker when they see em and they know someone who would know the difference as well. Trust is a big part of ANY service industry...

I'm no fan of Jiffy Lube, but the video was not clear as to whether all 5 of the shops caught in the sting were run by the same manager. If they were, I would think this was a more or less isolated example of a crooked manager. I doubt a company the size of JL would condone or knowingly overlook transgressions such as illustrated in this video.

I do know that JL pushes its people so sell a certain dollar value of services per person, including services of questionable value, like injector cleaning.

IMHO, the biggest issue with quick-lube places is not their integrity but the lack of proper training of the employees, and high turnover. Each time I go to the JL near me (because the company I work for requires us to take our company wheels there) I don't recognise anyone except the (challenged) kid who checks tire pressure and vacuums the cars. He's been there for years, but everyone else is new every time I go in.

Heck ya that's why I do when I have to deal with Mommy and Daddys cars. Anything done at Jiffy Lube I can easily do to my own cars, but sometimes I just don't feel like going under it outside when it's 30. Everytime they try to sell another air filter or something and last time I took my moms car in which is due at the end of the month because it's a lease, I was like put the cheapest oil in here... the air filter had leaves and dirt on it and I was like "Looks good to me, put it back."

Ya they were kinda amused how careless I was and I was shocked they didn't know how to open the hood dispite it being a 2005 American truck. :shake:

And I was just about to go to the JL around the way, and get the tranny flushed, I may still, but I'll keep a double watch, and at least I know what the machine is that they use.

And anyone know a good reputable place to get a tranny flush in NYC?

I had my Ford Probe serviced at Valvoline religiously and had their tech cut my CV boot and then show me - the dumbass actually tried to convince me that it was JUST starting and didn't throw the grease out yet - My mesh BBS wheels were immaculate and it was obvious that the cut had occured moments before. My service was the last.

Hell I had to get an oil change before driving back to Canada after Marauderville IV & I watched these guys like a hawk. They were going to install the oil filter without lubing the O ring. I tuned them up right there.

It's just so much eaiser to do your own service work, most shops will rip you off if given the opportunity.

I have always gone to WalMart's lube center to get my oil changed. I would like to change my own oil but I have never done it, and I don't really have the means to do it. I know it isn't that hard but it always seems more convenient to go somewhere to get it done But after seeing that video I may just have to start doing it myself.

I'm no fan of Jiffy Lube, but I really can't stand Joel Grover. (Or Paul Moyer for that matter.)

I recall one of their earlier 'exposes' of Jiffy Lube where they busted the manager for trying
to sell them an 'unnecessary' rear-end oil change on a Jeep Cherokee. Now, having replaced
a few side bearings in Cherokee rearends, I can tell you there pretty much is no such thing
as an unnecessary rearend oil change on a Jeep Cherokee.

That said, I've never been willing to trust any of my car's maintenance needs to anyone else,
let alone a Jiffy Lube.

I use an independent oil change place, that has always done good work for me in the past. I notice that they have the same guys there - some have been working there for 5-10 years.

I've had one problem with them - I got my car back and the filter was dripping oil. The owner's son came by, picked my car up, drove it back to the shop, and replaced the filter for me. It must have had a bad gasket.

They and myself are the only people I trust with my car.

Our local Wal-Mart "service" department always has at least two fresh oil trails leading from the service bay door, through the parking lot, and to the street. Only once in a while do I see evidence that the car's owner stopped, and went back.

As I said, there are always at least two fresh trails. As the old ones fade, there is always a new one. Anyone who takes their car there, after looking at this is an idiot.

I was talking about car maintenance with a co-worker. I explained how I used a shop I trusted to change my oil, because sometimes it is not convenient to do it myself. He told me "I always do my own oil changes, I don't trust anyone else."

Later, he told me that he was having some brake work done. I asked why he didn't do this himself - he'll trust someone with his life but not his engine?

I try to do everything I can myself, including this blower speed module! However, sometimes, I need to call in the pros. Good thing I've got a good Marauder Mechanic so close.
