I've been sick for about a week, yada yada yada. On the way to work one morning the volt meter started showing low voltage, and the battery light came on. I was only a few miles from work, so I drove it in as things started shutting down. I got a different battery, drove home and checked the Alt., it needed one and I bought one, and installed it. I started it, drove 11, 12 miles, and the battery light is still on, how long will it stay on, ( the battery voltage was down to about 10 volts, and now it's reading 12.4 on my volt meter, (hand held). I'm still sick, so I don't want to go back out, and dick around. Help Please!

Dis-connect the Batt. for @ 10 min.

It will go away...if It come back (knowing you have a new Alt.) your Batt. is bad (not holding a charge)...

ALOHA

BTW; Hope you feel better soon!

Check to see if battery cables are corrosion free, at the terminals and along any length of the cable you can see. It is always possible to get a bad battery and a bad alternator either new or rebuilt. But yes, disconnect again and see if that helps, certainly can't hurt.

Your alternator is not designed to "Charge" a discharged battery but to maintain a battery that is reasonably healthy and fully charged!!

Charge it over night with a trickle charger and you should be fine....if the battery and the new alternator and good!!??
