View Full Version : Is the oil supposed to be way, way, way over the "max" line?

I checked the dipstick for the first time in my car and I noticed that the oil crested about 4 inches above the word "max" on the dipstick. The engine did run a good 20 min before I took out the dipstick. I use full synthetic if that makes a difference. Also, the oil was really thin at the top, but didn't start to get thick until about where the min and max bar is.

and yes, I dont change my own oil.

Always wipe the dipstick off, reinsert all the way, and pull back out for an accurate reading. To check your oil, you gotta pull the dipstick twice. :)

You will get oil splash up the dipstick if you check not long after the car was running.

If it really is that high I don't think the car would run very well at all...!!

I think you are ok... seems like improper checking if it was thin at the top and that high... ALWAYS DOUBLE DIP!

I think you would have serious issues if it was 4 inches above max... you would probably be blowing blue smoke out the exhaust!!

Not to be smart but you did have the engine turned off yes?

The best time to check the oil is when the car is cold before you start it.

My friend did an oil change on his car and i noticed he had one too many empty quarts of oil for his car. Just curious would it cause any problems to be just one quart over the recommended number for your car
