Hey guys,
I spent all morning searching through old posts about engine ticking, but nothing current and no one seemed to nail it down.
I am going to the change the oil in the car tomorrow - I heard sometimes this could be the problem.
I hear a audible ticking noise at start up - it can be heard in the cabin and in the engien bay. The noses seems to float between the driver side front portion of the heads and sometimes to the passanger side as well? It is hard to pin down.
The noise goes away upon acceleration to my knowledge - the exhaust does not help here.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

It's a Ford. Fords tick. Mine has ticked since 2002. It's just the injectors cycling. Now if yours makes the dreaded tick, well mister, you got big problems. The way you describe it though, I'd lean toward injectors.

How many miles on it? Have you had an injector cleaning? Should do it every 30,000 to maintain performance and better gas mileage. Injectors tend to make noise if they are getting dirty.

Thanks!
I think the sound is normal - just like what the heck else can go wrong at this point.
I am going to change the oil and fuel filter.
What do you recommend for cleaning the injectors? Would the fluid do it up or is that a no no?
I also have a K&N drop in filter that I will put in. 4.10's and tune on da way hopefully next week.

The cleaner hooks up to the fuel injector rail.
You pull the fuse for the fuel pump then run the car dry. Hook the can up to the rail then start the car and when it stalls the injectors are all set. Change the fuel filter install the fuse and your good to go.
I don't know where you can buy the kit now but I use to get it through Matco and snap on tools. My Ford Dealership also does this for a service.
Putting the stuff in the tank is worthless the best ways are direct clean either on the rail or take them out and clean them personaly if you know what your doing.

Does it only "tick" at start-up? Could be your filter. Some of the cheaper ones (Fram for instance) drain when the engine is off causing a loud ticking at start-up; but goes away once the oil is circulating. Just something to keep in the back of your head.

The correct motorcraft filter is just as cheap as the Fram -- no one should be using anything lesser than an OEM filter. If you want to buy something more expensive that's your choice, but even the crappy auto parts stores like Autozone and Advance will stock the Motorcraft filter so I just get that and know everything will be okay.
