View Full Version : Anyone looked inside our stock mufflers?

Has anyone looked inside the stock mufflers after cutting them off (before throwing them away, LOL) I ask because I want to know if they have 2" pass tubes all the way through, or if they reduce further inside. A lot of stock type mufflers will have a pass tube that is much smaller than the pipe diameter. We already have a tiny 2" stock pipe so I can't imagine the pass tubes are even smaller but I'm just curious... If someone can show me a pic looking into each end of the stock muffler that would be great.

I think the sound of the stock MM w/ stock tips is "perfect" for what I like -- just enough tone to let you hear it when you tip in, but otherwise quiet. I'm 24 and I work on muscle cars but I am sick of loud droning cars, so this car is a pleasant change of pace. I'm thinking about up sizing the mid pipes and then getting quiet aftermarket mufflers but I hate to get rid of the stock mufflers because I think they sound excellent and are tuned perfectly. Any deviation from the "stock sound" is going to be a detriment as far as I'm concerned. "Quiet power" is my goal. I don't want it one ounce louder than stock if I can help it. I already have a muffler in mind I have used in the past that will flow well and be very quiet...

Somewhere in previous posts I saw someone (Todd/TAF?) who wanted to minimize the sound on their 2-1/2" aftermarket exhaust;
They installed a 2 inlet/2 outlet muffler in their system in place of an H-pipe.
This was in addition to the two aftermarket mufflers that they had installed in place of the OEM mufflers.
It looked like a really trick idea for a quiet, yet high flow system!

I would be bumping up to just 2.25" mandrel bent mid pipe. 2.5" is overkill for a stock engine w/ manifolds on it. Plus the big pipe/big pass tube mufflers at that point start making it difficult to keep the volume down. Yeah I have seen people use the "X" style 2 in/out mufflers as a sort of "cross over" and sound attenuator. I guess I could switch to 2.25's and my mufflers of choice, and if its too loud still then add the "x" muffler.

I get a kick out of the blasting loud exhausts on these cars. The MM is not exactly a sleeper that needs to be announced -- the bling bling stock wheels and exhaust tips already let anyone who would be interested in cars, what car it is, without making tons of noise and pissing off bystanders who don't care what kind of car it is anyway.
