All I can add is follow 'the book' when in doubt.

In my old -04 p71 the steering didn't feel right so i drained the system. (removed bottom hose from reservoir and run engine for a few seconds)
And put redline power steering fluid in and the steering felt much better.
I'm gonna do the same in the marauder.

Technically there's no such thing as "Mercon" anymore. Ford stopped licensing that product last June. Most of the major fluid brands (Pennzoil, Castrol, etc) now call that product "Domestic Vehicle ATF" or "D/M" (Dexron/Mercon) or something equally generic.
According to Ford, Mercon V is now approved for use in all former Mercon applications.
Either product should be more than satisfactory for an undemanding use like the power steering.

Thanks RF. I bought Pennzoil. So far, so good.

I've been flushing mine every couple of years and using the Mobil 1 synth ATF product with good results. Don't notice the p/s pump being any quieter or anything, but everything seems to be running well.
