View Full Version : Possible Exhaust "Drone" Fix......

I have a custom system with Magnaflow cats, custom H-pipe, 18" Magnaflow mufflers to stock tail pipes and tips!! The sound is great and there has always been a resonant vibration I could feel in the shifter and floor of the car.....not objectionable or even considered to be "Drone"!!:shake:

At the time of the exhaust upgrade I asked about putting the vibration dampers back on the system (the small red ones welded to the OEM mufflers) and was told to trash them!!

Well, I decided to buy a couple of the ones used on the 2002 and up CV's and installed them today.....UNBELIEVABLE!!! ALL the vibration is gone and the only sound from the exhaust is out back with no interior harmonics....WOW!!!

Ford spends a lot of time on "NVH" and I guess the bolt on dampers really help the stock system and now my Magnaflow system!!:D

For about $70.00 you can get both dampers (I have the part numbers if anyone is interested) and perhaps the "Drone" some folks have can be minimized or eliminated using them??

I bought the Ford dampers made for the Ranger TSB when I started noticing a strange vibration right after having the h-pipe installed and it cleared it right up. I think they were like $30 apiece at the Ford parts counter. They clamp onto the exhaust pipe with a u-bolt. I put them on the tailpipes just as they turn up to go over the axle.

See the rear dampers on this TSB link:

I wonder if Embassy even knows that they are there.

Save the old ones - they will still work!

CALL RAY, The Dealer, his prices are good for Ford OEM parts.

It just dawned on me that it is quite possible some of the "Bad" catalytic converters that rattled like the media was broken could have simply been the lack of dampers on custom systems??

Or people could have shattered the elements in their converters by running the system without the dampers and having it shake them apart

Funny you should say that. I noticed them when I was under the Merc, adjusting the air ride and changing the fuel filter.

I learn something new everday it seems.

Found out today that the cut coils used to be TMF's.

If the weather ever clears, I'm going over the car with a fine-toothed comb to learn as much as I can about her.

Back on topic, the exhaust note on my Marauder sounds downright sinister cruising around town and during acceleration. On the interstate, they quiet down well due to JD putting sound-deadening in the rear and apparently because of those dampers.

After I got my rear section put back on and the Flowmasters after my short side pipe fetish I noticed a vibration at a certain 5 mph range only, give it a little bit more gas and goes right away.

I'll have to look into this since it seems pretty simple.

Question: Is there any better or worse location to install these dampers?

Marauderjack
05-12-2008, 01:52 PM
I suppose if you were an engineer with A LOT of spare time you could put the car on a dyno.....clamp the dampers at various spots and record the vibration at various RPM's to get an exact location??

That is probably how they research it during "NVH" testing......but these are designed to bolt to the flanges after the cats so that's where mine are.

About 2 years ago I had a shop cut off my OEM mufflers and install Dynomax Super Turbos. The super turbos are mild and cause virtually zero drone. However, I had MM tips installed a week ago (with the same mufflers) and now I have pretty noticeable droning at around 2K rpm. :mad2:

I already have the pictured dampers on the flange after the cats on my vehicle, just like Marauderjack's. Will another set of these help? Any ideas??

First thing you might try is taking them off.......may surprise you??

Long story - short:
It turns out that, for some reason, I had the factory exhaust damper only on the passenger side and NOT on the driver side. I ordered the driver side damper and installed. Though I cannot say the overall drone is reduced much, it has definitely shifted rearward----it doesn't sound/feel as if I'm sitting on top of the source anymore; the source point seems to be way out back (where it is supposed to be). This is a significant improvement.

Thanks for the tip.

i have a question...my exhaust has no tips and dumps straight after the muffler, before the rear axle. Where do i attach these?!?!Is it even possible?

DJCV

These Ford dampers attach at the connection point (flange) between the catalytic-converter downpipe and the pipe section which leads directly to the muffler.
