I'm looking to rebuild my trac loc with the carbon fiber discs from Ford racing,
Is the spring that is included with the FRP rebuild kit any stiffer than stock?
Should I just get the carbon discs?

From my understand the carbon clutches were mainly used because of the noise in the "non carbon" ones... performance difference is minimal..

You supposed to be able to add 1 extra clutch also.

I have a 32-spline & axles that I'll be installing as soon as I rebuild the posi unit.

Get the spring, they go bad. My car is still in shop for the lack of one.

I ordered the Ford racing kit from Summit and it included what looked to me as a heavier spring. I havent installed it yet to make the comparison.

Thanks, I am going to visually inspect my clutches when I have the rear apart for gear swap #4. I think they are fine at 30k miles and the limited slip grabs very aggressively when you get on it, but I'll take a peek just to make sure. I was having pretty severe chatter/groaning noises after putting Redline 75-140 synth fluid in until I added 4oz of ford racing friction modifier, then the chatter stopped.

Hey Brad...your'e probably already in process by now....but why not just replace the unit with one that doesn't fail so quickly?

I spent my oem lsd at like 15k and went right to an Auburn and it has been history ever since.

The only time it goes peg leg is at the drag strip.
My Trac-loc has been pretty rugged, W/ over 60 K and hundreds of passes.

Usually guys switch from the "cone of death" Auburn to a clutch type, not the other way around.

I read over at CVN that you can use a F-150 spring.

Member "JohnE" at CVN:

The first two turns in the morning are the only time I notice the extra clutch/spring. Otherwise you never notice anything odd. Have over 100,000 miles on my clutches now any it acts exactly the same as when first installed. I've only changed the fluid once and added friction modifier two other times.

In the first two 90* turns, the inside wheel wants to turn the same speed as the outside wheel.

I highly recommend a Traction Lock with an extra set of clutches and the F-150 spring.

Is the 04s or 03s that came with trac-loc?

How much is it Wes.? I have the Carbon Fiber pack ready to go in. If the F-150 spring is that much more stout, maybe I should get it...

Rebuild in progress, my mechanic buddy was concerned that the extra clutch may cause the axle to bind on tight corners.

This would be the first that I heard of such a concern.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about clutches chattering and wearing really fast with the altered stacking of the trac loc. I wouldn't do it personally.

The clutch material with the Cobra clutches is much beefier than stock.
My mechanic buddy advised against using the extra clutch.
He said it was a tight fit with the Cobra clutches and F-150 spring.
the new unit measured 5000th thicker than stock.
First impression on the test drive:
No chatter or binding smooth and very grabby.

I ordered that spring separate, one identical came included in the kit.

Icarus, you mentioned the correct number for the heavy duty clutch rebuild kit, but you didn't mention if the heavier spring was included or not. BradleyG has cleared up this question.

Now what gear oil weight do you guys use?

Bradley G
06-05-2008, 11:13 AM
I used all motorcraft fluids, I think it was 75-140w & two bottles of friction modifier. I understand you are supposed to soak the clutch discs in friction modifier and dispose of the fluid.
The other bottle is added to the diff .

I have had my rear apart quite a few times on this car. I have used both 75-140 synth of different brands, and also 80-90 conventional. I haven't noticed any difference in clutch performance, etc. The trac loc pinion shaft for the spiders was galling pretty fast w/ Ford 75-140 in there, so I don't see that it was doing anything particularly great to prevent wear, that $1.79 80-90 conventional wouldn't.

'Tis true, thanks for pointing that out :)

I used Ford synthetic 75W140 + Ford modifier in the FRPP Trak-Lok unit I just put in with the 4.30's...

How many quarts of 75-140 does a gear change require?? friction modifier regardless of synthetic fluid??? mobile 1 LS?? needs added friction modifier?

I use Royal purple gear oil. It already has the friction modifier mixed in and it takes 2 1/2 of them to fill.
If the oil you choose isn't designed for limited slip rears, then you will have to add the modifier. Any Ford dealer sells it for like $9 if I remember correctly.

fastblackmerc

If you use Redline fluid you don't need to add friction modifier either.
