View Full Version : 91 Octane with 10% Ethanol?

I've always avoided ethanol containing premuim for my Marauder, especially now with it having forced induction. I use Shell V-Power 91 octane up where I live, which specically states that it contains no ethanol. This is the fuel used when the car was dyno tuned. One thing that I am concerned about; however, is if I should be travelling and find myself having to use fuel that contains ethanol. Could such a scenario be a major issue, or would one simply have to avoid wide open throttle? What, if any implications could occur? I have thus far received conflicting information in this regard.
Thanks

I run 91+ 10-20% ethy in my car all the time, while its not blown, it does not show any adverse effects with my tune, other than the obvious loss of gas mileage. And no, my tune is not setup for ethy gas explicitly

Implications? We don't want no stinkin' implications!:)
You normally won't suffer problems...the only one being about 10% less gas mileage with the 10% mixture. There is practically no car made in the last 15 years that can't handle it. The real problem is that pre-1995 vehicles were not all manufactured with alcohol resistant rubber fuel connection hoses. The alcohol has a tendency to eat away as these non-treated hoses and can cause problems.
In addition, virtually all major metropolis' contain a 50 mile radius in which the 10% mixture is distributed. You pretty much can't get away from it anywhere in the U.S. anymore.

In the Virginia, Maryland and DC area you are only gonna find 93 Octane with 10% enthanol in most places. I haven't seen anything else in this area. The other two choices are 87 and 89.

The gas I buy here is 91 octane Shell with 10% ethanol making it 93 octane. My MM is stock and it runs the same as if I go buy the 91 octane w/out ethanol.
Mileage wise it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Driving style has more of an effect for me.

I was finally able to get a hold of my tuner, who alleviated my concerns about ethanol fuel. He said it would not be a problem, but would decrease power slightly by around 5 or so real wheel horsepower. Peronsally, I'm still going to go out of my way to use non-ethanol premium. Even when the car was N/A, I didn't like the way it ran on ethanol and I feel that my mileage suffered also, in comparison to non-ethanol premium.

+1 on performance and mileage with the 10% ethanol mix. The Bluesmobile runs a lot better on straight petrol 93 octane.
