View Full Version : Is this bad for the car?

I keep disconnecting and connecting the battery because I'm really paranoid about theft until I get a decent alarm. I do this maybe twice a week when I know I won't be in position of the car. Seems like all I have to do is reset the clock, but am I damaging anything?
Thanks.

Probably just the MAF has to relearn everytime, but shouldn't be a big deal, at least I don't think so.
If you don't disconnect the battery, you should back into (preferably) a spot, turn the front wheels, put the parking brake on, and get a club for it.

Dom, in some cases the OBD 'puter must re-learn it's duties if the battery has been disconnected, and since you have a SC tune, it may take a few minutes of normal driving to re-train. Go on-line and do a search for a kill switch for, say the fuel pump, or some other function that will prevent the car from starting. A well hidden kill switch, in my opinion, is one of the cheapest/best insurance policy's you can install. The best part is, it costs next to nothing... which is the part I like best. :D
All you need is a pair of wires, one of 'em fused, and a SPST switch, and you're good to go.

If your serious about alarms you should just get pain generators. Sirens that are designed to permentaly damage human hearing. I believe you can still order them through Tweeter. They are call "Pizo alarms" I am not sure on the name.
My friend installed 3 into a M5 - one in the cabin one in the trunk and one under the hood. No one can stand near the car - the alarms can cause permentaly hearing loss just an FYI. Make sure you get them installed by a professional to ensure no hicups.

The other bad thing is you'll be rounding off the nut on the terminal. They're pretty soft. Also, tightening and loosening the terminal may cause fatigue wear (cracks).
The car doesnt learn squat that would effect driving.
Dominick, you arent harming anything.

Was Dom driving? May have had a PEBSWADS issue...problem exists between steering wheel and drivers seat.
BTW, if you decide this is something you want to do you can also buy a big battery disconnect switch, this will save wear and tear on your terminals.

I am not implying anything. You did not put a forged motor in. You knew you would eventually put a blower on the car.
So....

Just drop some money into and aftermarket alarm and get some sirens for it. Pizo is a brand for the sirens but there are a few companies that make them, they are really easy to hook up with a aftermarket alarm...just a positive and negative. Normally about $10 a piece. I have installed them in all of my cars, but you wont want to be anywhere near it that is for sure because they WILL cause hearing damage when the alarm is set off.

Now Steve you told me your engine was stock when I saw you last. Did you lie to me or did you decide to add onto the "wrong" engine too???

So you have the "wrong" engine in your car according to you?
What you meant to me was when I went to replace it with the intention of putting a blower on it that was the "wrong" thing to do correct? Well I still was planning on keeping it a street car because 9psi on a stock engine is fine and you know what 13,000 miles later it's still just fine. Seems al"right" to me. ;)

My observation: Battery connected = alarm. Disconnected = no alarm. At least you're making it easier for them to go unnoticed if they do steal your car.

Dom,
I dont think that disconnecting the battery adds any protection from a theft. If someone wants to steal it, they're going to do it with or without the battery disconnected. Sure it may slow them down for about 5 seconds, but they're still going to get it. They cant steal it without the key anyway, so their only chance would be to tow it, and a disconnected battery isnt going to stop them from dragging it away.
You're better off buying The Club while you're waiting for an alarm.

Bottom line is if they want it then there is no stopping them (realy bad people)
Check with your insurance company and see if you can get replacement value, then hope someone steals it :)

Instead of disconecting the battery evertime....just pull a fuse....but like what was said above....no key means they cant start it anyway. But a tow truck will do in a pinch.
