Well its been two years.. Hows your welded bumper supports? Still working?

I did this with two pieces of flatstock and a jig, plus a proguard.
Link in sig, "bonus" zip tie version included!

All the recent threads about the sagging rear end finally motivated me to fix mine. I've had a Proguard for years now and still got the dreaded sag plus since I put this thing on it's been flapping around making noise. So heres my fix. For the sag I copied the brackets in the first post but to addresse the flapping Proguard I made a L/R set of brackets that attatched to the tailpipe hanger bolts and down to the ends of the Proguard. Now this thing is good and solid with no flex.

Mine looks bad. It starting to have huge gaps under the tail lights. Even with the Proguard I drive to fast.

All the proguard does is keeps the lower part of the bumper cover from bellowing out while driving down the highway but it is not designed to keep the bumper up in place on the car.

The upper part of the cover can still have a problem with how it sits. It should be removed and have a brace made that holds the entire upper part of the cover in place accross the entire rear of the car to sit right and stay that way and keep nice line's.

Yes I did see that but the gaps still do not look totaly even under the tail lights.

I want to remove the bumper cover and redesign somthing that keeps the entire bumper cover on the car with perfect gap line's all the way around.

Can I see a pic of how it looks now please?

As you can see just under the tail lights on both side's it actualy dips down and has a slope that goes under the trunk lid on mine.

This is why I said I wanted to do something that suported the entire upper half of the bumper cover.

Thanks for the pics BTW.

But ya as you show and what I am talking about as well it looks like an entire bracket needs to be made that actualy supports the whole top of the bumper cover especialy to get rid of that bulge up spot in the center of the rear tail lights on both sides.

that would be pretty difficult to do.

I guess I will find out this next week. After the cruise night in Bristol Saturday I plan to take the rear bumper cover off and see how it is set up and start work on a wrap around bracket to make the entire cover sit with an even line and even gaps.

Just bugs me a bit now that I am going to shows with her and want to try and get a better fit and finish.

the bumper is easy to remove, there are like 2-3 nuts on each side under the carpet, about 8-10 maybe on the rear under the carpet and that lil plastic trim piece by the deck lid latch. there are a few push pins under the car and IIRC there are a few smaller bolts on the back underneath the car. its really flimsy so get a hand to pull it off or you might mess it up

Thanks for the insight and the heads up about the cover.

I am going to take the car over to Dave's because in the upsatirs of his garage he has every possable machine I need from a laithe, band saw and so on down the line to make something up.

Now that he has me around to work on his cars he is looking into having another bay added on and have a rotory lift put in for me to work with.

Nice to have a friend with money to burn :D

Sorry about that. But between him and all of his other car guy friends this working on the ground with jacks and stands is a PITA to say the least.

This would allow me to do the exhaust systems, rear axle's, tranny's and more.

Personaly I wish I could get every thing I need to go back to building race engine's again but the capital needed in equipment is just way too much.

He has the commercial property that could be used for it but the market now a days is a lot more iffy than it use to be and being only one guy and having to work on all of their cars would make it difficult to handle.

Just one of those pipe dreams that will never happen.
