View Full Version : I have been challenged to a Drag Race

This guy who goes to our local roadside grill/saloon has a 1970 Chevy Nova with a 350 CI motor, stroked to 383. All motor stick car. This guy is really a jerk and knows it all. He pokes fun at my Marauder calling it a Ford what-ever car. The car looks and sounds really nice, a little cammy sounding and a really clean old muscle car.

So he says to me the other day, so when do you want to run the Marauder against my Chevy? I say anytime, but it will be at the track. Then I say, well we might as well run for some money. So he boldly says how about a $1000.00? I respond with how about $2000.00? He says sure, I don't care if it is $5000. because you are going to lose anyway. I said I don't think so. I said bring cash money and we'll have a friend hold it until the race is over.

I asked him I hope you plan on running me with slicks. He says nope, just the way the car sits. 15" wheels with some funky tires with raised white letters. He says run what you brung.......I say sure. The he says and you can use your nitrous if you want because you still won't beat me.....I laugh and asked him if he had the car to the track yet. He says nope, but I am sure it will run 10.40's......I laugh again and say you are out of your mind? He says I use to drag race years ago and it "feels" like a 10.40 car, I am sure of it...I laugh again and say what it feels like and what it will run at the track are two different things.

I have seen numerous older cars like his run over the years. Some run really fast but with tubbed rear ends, huge slicks, radical motors, one seat in a gutted car. But this car is full interior, a stick car and probably has never seen the track. I don't think it will run 12.4 never mind 10.4.....he is dreaming....

My plan is to run this guy, put up $2000.00 and go for it.....I'll be surprised if he puts up the money and follows through.....I hope he does....this guy has a really big mouth and needs it shut.......

So what do you guys think????

I say kick his a$$ sea-bass!!! Just shutting this guy up would be worth the 2k risk... Hell, I've got $100 on it just to see what happens. There's nothing like a little action to make things interesting...

From you avatar and signature....I say teach this guy a lesson...BUT will you guys be able to check each others car out first? (too much PINKS) And I am sure for 2000.00 if he loses he may want a 3 out of 5 race...(more PINKS)

Just let us know how things turn out if and when you two race.

Good Luck
GOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo Marauder!

Tom I say go for it! I would not open my hood either. This guy sounds like all mouth mouth with a little motor. make him run on the street tires and headers closed as this is what he wants.

Leave the Bow tie at the bar. He will not raise the money nor will you be satisfied by the victory. Guys like him will always make excuses about what ever. Don't play his game. You know you got the aces in the card game. His is just frustrated about his pitiful life and the only thing that rewards him is his car and a jar of vaseline.

Prolly the best idea. No thrill in a beat down that bad. He'll just be watching taillights for a 1/4 mile. And if he actually pays, he'll continually make excuses, say it wasn't a fair race, etc, etc. He'll never shut up, whether you race him or not, win or lose, he's just one of those mouthy types.

Tell him to take it to the track for a t&t and get a timeslip, then decide if he really wants to race.

rayjay
05-05-2008, 06:22 AM
I like the idea about making him pony up a timeslip 1st. Nothing like embarassing him before you get to the track.

05-05-2008, 06:23 AM
You guys are probably right. Although I really think this guy will race me. He has a serious ego problem and the people at the roadhouse are already setting up a race pool. This is the first time in a long time that a person has gotten under my skin. I should let it go, but..........I really, really want to shut him down.....just to have him not show up at our roadhouse any more would be worth it. Good idea Brian on having him go get a time slip...that alone may shut him down. I also thought about letting him race my son-in-laws Lincoln Procharger MK VIII 11.9 et car. If he can beat him, than I'll race him. I'll put up $500.00 for that race alone....

Will do Ed. I am leaving for a three week road trip and will be back on Saturday the 24th. So the following week at a Bradenton TnT is possible if this follows through.......we'll see............

Mark is probably right as well....but this guy is really serious and I think he will show up...in fact if it happens, we will drive up to the track together from the roadhouse with probably 20-30 cars following.

Kinda reminds me of when I was in my 20's and headed out to Mary Dunn Road behind the Hyannis Airport on Cape Cod for drag racing tourists who drove up from NJ, NY and PA with their muscle cars looking for $100. races. Problem with those guys is we nailed them really bad. My buddies and I had 5.34 gears and drove around with cheater slicks on our cars like sharks looking for little fish....:D

I tend to agree with Mark on this one. I suspect he is already planning on a bogus IOU for the stake money.

The timing sounds sweet, for if things go as planned I'll get mine Dyno'ed the weekend before, and will need a track to test it on since Moroso will be closed for reconstruction as of the 19th of this month.

Unless you don't mind loosimg the $2K, don't race. Just kidding. I'm surprised he wants to do it at the track. That type usually wants to run on the skreet, no unbiased witnesses means no payout. I say take him, even if you loose, we'll still love you here.

Even if this dork's "Magical Mouse Motor" had enough HP to turn a 10.40....he is NEVER gonna hook it on street tires!

Annihilate him and send him home wondering how a silver Ford Taxi smoked his a$$!....:alone:

BTW: I agree with everyone else...he is NOT going to pay up, once he loses.

Watch out though, he COULD lie, and put slicks on but make it look like they're his regular 15's or whatever he has. Try and take a peek at them if you can the night you race. We need a video too.

If you drove your car home, did you use the slicks that you ran to get the 10.9? Is that legal?

If its a N/A 383 in a nova with full interior and street tires, there is no way he will run 10's.

i'd say low 13's to mid 12's as the best range.

You actually own a 10 second car, so i dont see why using it to make some extra mod money would be so bad.

Stranger in the Black Sedan

Yeah a street 383 on street tires is going to be lucky to hit high 12s

Go for it, but bring about three or four friends, at least (really), and come armed. $4000.00 in cash money is nothing to sneeze at. No fun getting jacked up on the grounds or on the road home.

Please don't flash the cash, unless he does, have a friend hold it before hand.

This guy is not living in your world and sounds flaky. FWIW

I told him to use slicks. Even then there is no way in hell that car will run 10.4's. I have a buddy of mine with a 69 Chevy Nova with a 396, big, carb, cam and slicks and runs 12.6 consistantly. A beautiful car. But old technology against new....He laughed when I told him about this deal. He said go for it and shut him up. He knows about my car and was at the track when I ran 2 - 10.9 passes.

We're all pulling for you and have confidence in your driving abilities and your car's performance.

But...........don't underestimate your opponent, this smells like a set up, or a ringer or a hustle. Be aware of sabatoge.

Remember the old adage, "if it's too good to be true then it probably is".

If it's on the up and up then we have no doubt as to who will win, you.

My street Camaro went 10.90 on street tires all motor but it is a 548 with a BIG roller cam and aluminum heads.
His car on slicks should go 12.80 to 13.20 .

I will gladly invest in this race.

Thanks Mike....That is what I am thinking he will do for an et as well. This car is no where the car like your Camaro is with that monster 548 motor.

I went off the wall when I ran 10.9 with my car with my street Nitto Drag radials. Drove 93 miles to the track, raced and came home. Doesn't get any better than that. I am confident that she will make 10.4 or 10.5 by the fall with some cooler weather here or in November when I go to Georgia at SSHS8.

Just remember do not gamble with more money than you care to lose if it comes to that. Casinos were not built over people winning. If I was you I would race, but again if you lose the money make sure it is an amount you will be ok with.

If I gamble (rarely do at all) I always bring in how much I am willing to part with and will leave everything else at home because I don't trust myself to stay to my own word. I keep the debit card at home and the rest of the cash.

When he first got the car I looked it over bumper to bumper. He started it up for me and I completely check out the engine bay and more. The problem with this guy is his ego....a big ego. He backed himself into a corner this past Saturday when he challenegd me in front a bunch of his and my friends. Of course they started playing it up and then started betting among themselves. Funny thing (I was told on the side) it is 8-2 in favor of my car winning. And a few of them know cars. He'll probably back off and still want to race me, but for free or $100.00 in the end. Either way I am going to race his azz and will not need to change out my 100 shot, I'm sure.

IMOH there is no way that he can get deep into 12's, let alone low 13's. He will not be able to hook up with street tires, unless he has had many runs with that set up, and he has done some suspension mods and launches perfect. 1970 Nova's, with stock suspension were terrible with wheel spin/hop. It sounds like you are an experienced driver, with many runs with your set up. I would not deviate anything from your normal routine when running him. Heat the tires, go right to stage, no games between pre-stage and stage, don't even look at him. Many people, when running for money, will not do what they normally do, and mess up. One little lapse in the mental game, and it's over. Don't overdrive and break something. But me thinks he has no chance, no chance at all. :)

You should never under-estimate your competition. I watched a 90's Fox body coupe on street tires run 11.50's at nearly 140mph.

What does that tell you?

It should tell you that he had no traction off the line but once rolling it was a rocket.

Jon is right, you just never know what he might turn out. But he sounds like a douche and is very certain he'll win, and I don't think that will be the case at all. If he knows Tom's car is fast, he would at least recognize it and then say, "Yea, it will be a good race but I think I'll win." To me he just sounds like an arrogant Chevy owner.

One little lapse in the mental game, and it's over. Don't overdrive and break something. But me thinks he has no chance, no chance at all. :)

Wags

Thanks, Mike & Wags. Naw I'll run like I have been drag racing for 37 years, whether for money or trying to beat my personal best. Trust me, I have it down pretty well;). But your right, I'll be really surprised if he can make the the 12's. Maybe the high 12's, maybe. We'll see if he even decides to show up. I saw him last night and told him lets "git r' done, May 29th at a TnT in Bradenton. We'll drive up together, race and come home. He said OK....we'll see....

And just last weekend I watched yet another fox mustang at the local track run 9.606 with NO POWER ADDERS on a small block.

You just never know what you are up against.

Believe me John, in this particular case I know EXACTLY what I am up against. I've known this guy for about 6 years. This is his "first" muscle car in 20 years (he is 55 yrs old) that he bought in NC. It is indeed a beautiful car, nice paint, full interior, restored engine all with red line poly-glass tires." But it is not any way a drag car. A show car to go to cruise nights in. That's it. Like you, I have been around the block for a while my friend;)......but I appreciate your concern:up:

Subscribing to this one. I didn't realize the scope of this race until I read the avatar. It became crystal clear for me at that point. You are going to beat the brakes off of him. Do it and make us proud all over again!!!!

I must say other than my own you have my second favorite Marauder on here. It'll run 10's, you actually drive it, you can still have your A/C, radio, seats and you drive around and sometimes trouble finds you. This is what it is all supposed to be about. You truely have a real car, broken cars go on trailers!

Ahhh. Memories. My Dad and I used to race a 68 Nova SS. It would run 10.90's on "cheater slicks". It had a full interior. So I don't see why a Nova can't run in the 10's. Oh .... did I mention that ours had a aluminum block 427? When we sold the car, the guy who bought it raced it regularly and it was rumored to have a Junior Johnson built L-88. Little did they know that Dad built the engine in a buddies garage on weekends.

Yeah ... sorry, I don't see a streetable small block Chevy pulling even the lightweight Nova to 10 second quarter miles.

MarauderTJA i can't wait to see the vid :banana2:.

it sounds like you have this Race in the bag. My 69 Nova w/383 ran best of 12.6 N/A with street tires and 11.00 w/slicks and 175 shot and spone most of the sixty foot. as long as he doesn't install the nitrous you should be good....

have fun and good luck!

Didn't show up the other night at the roadhouse where we were suppose to meet and head to the track. I think he :chicken:'d out.

I was hoping that he would use slicks and nitrous. Would have made it a better race. I think he realizes, or has been told to :wflag:. Oh well, maybe next time.

No way. Man, you have to go back to the roadhouse and order wings. Chicken wings. Eat them in front of him. It will be great to find out what excuse he has for not showing.

I ran a stroker 302 on the dyno at a Mustang show last weekend. It made 147 hp. Clean curve, no hitches and ran smooth as silk. Think the owner was impressed with having a clean curve, though? Most 350's with just a "cam" job are still dogs. Its a great engin just like the 302, but without work it sure isn't go to impress anyone. I don't need to wonder why he didn't show up. I know. A friend with a car that really did make power had a chat with him and woke him up.

I always had Chevys until now.. 327 with 300 runs on it and always ran in the mid to low 12's, started out around the 13's until we tweaked it down over time. The motor was clean as a whistle after 300 runs and we replaced the valve springs and sold the motor. Then we went to a 350 full roller, that ran in the mid to high 10's. Dont knock anyone or anything. Bring a radar gun to the track if they are hiding their ET so you can gauge what they have by the final speed and this will give you a benchmark.

The last car we had was a Chevelle (some of you who go to Raceway park or Atco may remember the car "Blood, sweat and beers) with a 540 and an air shifted powerglide. My brother in law got his NHRA license with that car and after the final run for the ticket and after the papers were signed, he dropped the hammer on it and ran the car into the low 9's at Atco and we were thrown off the track. by 20 or so runs the car was in the mid to high 8's. Lots of fun going down there and renting the track with some other guys and running this beast.

If anyone is interested in the Northeast, you can rent Atco during the week. You can get lots of runs and maybe we can make a day of it by renting it and running Marauders et al. all day long with virtually no wait time. 12 guys run about $125 a piece.. Good times!!

Cool idea. If we can get 24 cars to get the price to under $70 each, I'd be interested. I would need to know a date well in advance in order to get a day off work.
