Accelerator 'Space" Between It and Transsmission Hump
There IS in my opinion a significant amount of "foot space" between the accelerator and the transmssion hump. This situation comes this way from the factory as I understand it with each of our MM's- however I find this to be a real Safety Concern..
I for one, have had my foot slide pass the pedal into this "open " area and get caught under the accelrator. It takes quick reaction and not to panic to resolve the condition from turning into a BAD Situation...
Ok--Mrs marauderman was driving the MM last evening and her foot, even more narrow than mine, slid off and got caught and in her reaction, she accidently caused the accelerator to increase --this was as she was attempting to pull back her right foot to apply brake while approaching a traffic light to turn right.
Fortunately no one was in front as the car increased in speed rapidly before her foot cleared the "hang-up" to hit the brakes before arriving at the stopped intersection.
OK--Question is--Has ony one else suffered this occurrence and don't you think we need to find a way to correct it-I do--Maybe an attachment to slide over and lock or screw in place onto the accelerator that would reduce this "Space" for trapping the foot--
What do you all think? Tom

Nope, no problems here, but then I were size 15 gun boats.

I think our slighter members may have experienced the problem. We will see.

I have size 12's. I've been complaining about this gap ever since I bought the car. It's really the ONLY thing uncomfortable about the driving position. I usually drive with my toes on the pedal, not my entire foot. This is with my ankle leaning against the tranny tunnel To achieve this in the MM, I've got to bend my ankle about 30° which is uncomfortable to say the least. I too would like to move the gas pedal over about 1-1&1/2 inches to the right to close up that gap.
Anybody have any ideas? I've thought about some sort of extension, but that's about as far as I've gotten with a fix.

Had that happen more than once. "Dang this this isn't stopping well..." and the RPM is sitting at 2000....

martyo--no -not about that but she has often wondered about why everything about me is so long and narrow, ah, arms, legs, feet, shoes for the feet. of course the etc...naw--can't say she "complains"..more like constantly referring to being stretched ...in height, fingers, oh well, you get the idea.....so ..answer is ..no
I bought a set of silver/carbon fiber pedals. nothing fancy just the ones that you can place over the pedals. They go good with the interior but don' look to "ricey" if you know what i mean. They helped eliminate that space and IMHO are a quick, cheap and easy way to do a little personalizing and help alleviate the problem.

I haven't experienced the problem. For those who cover the accelerator and brake, try left foot braking

Hey crom--Can you explain for me and the board:
1. Where your pedals were purchased
2. How you installed them--fit over/replaced OEM's,etc.
3. Carbon Fiber-? Is that type material important?
and any other significant importance to your resolve beyond your original explaination--Thanks--Tom

I believe that the Taurus/Sable had a problem with the pedals being positioned too closely together. There was a recall to adjust the pedal positions.

Tom:
I purchased the pedal set at my local Autozone. They are in the section with all the "ricer" stuff i.e. neon lites etc... They are designed to fit over the stock pads. There are different types as far as design, material and most importantly how they mount over the existing pedals. I tried a couple different ones till I found a set that worked well. The gas pedal is the toughest because it's made of plastic and is curved the length of the pedal. The set I ended up using have metal strips/tabs on the back side. there is also a double sided adhesive pad. Just put the adhesive pad on the back of the pedal, position it over the existing gas pedal and bend the metal tabs around the back of the gas pedal. For the brake pedal it's the same, only i took the factory rubber pad off then put the new brake pad on. I've had them on for about a month, no problems. I went with the silver/carbon fiber to try and match the interior. The are not actually made out of carbon fiber, but instead are made of metal/plastic. Hope this answers your questions. Oh yea, the cost for the set was $25 bucks.

Phew...that's good news!
I'm all for a pedal upgrade.
Other than the ones mentionned here (I'm assuming from the "ricer" section at Pep Boys, Advanced, etc.) anyone try the Steeda covers? Will they work?

Last thing I want to do is complicate the problem with something that is not stable or doesn't fit.
Thoughts, please...

Like Todd said--want to make it Fit/work properly--FOR SURE!
You know-if we can think it up--someone has already got it in production somewhere--so don't hesitate with any of your questions--just like I did here--see-- it has shown others have experienced the problem and there are answers to our problems....
any other thoughts are welcomed too.---Thanks-- Tom

I wear size 13s and have had my foot slid off the pedal and get stuck momentarily on the side like that. I think the gas pedal needs to move a bit inboard away from the brake pedal.
