View Full Version : Power Pedal Function

Just hit 40K and noticed that the pedals which I never raise were just twitching when I hit the switch.

My wife drives it (only when I have no choice in extreme emergencies) and puts the seat forward and raises the pedals.

The dealer replaced the brake pedal and a motor I guess, (I had to recheck the alarm and underbody lighting install, plus the plastic cover plate and what he messed with under the hood when he was done, just in case), but left the gas pedal alone. I'm too paranoid but it looks like he didn't screw anything up.

Two things: 1) I can't remember: is the brake pedal supposed to be a bit higher than the gas?

And, 2) when the pedals are lowered all the way, at the very bottom the gas pedal jumps up about 1/2" and kind of locks into place at a higher position. Is this normal? I hadn't used them myself for so long that I can't remember if the gas pedal did this little jump before. It does not do it when they're raised.

Thanks for checking for me and for any info.

I have replaced the brake pedal in 4 MM's and 2 CV's. There is a plastic gear on the top of the brake pedal that cracks (it is inside the white plastic housing on the upper end of the brake pedal). You can tell because it will do just as you say yours did pre-repair, the pedals will only move a twitch and stop. It's because the cracked gear will only make one revolution before coming to the broken part and jamming the teeth and stopping. It is on the brake pedal part, the actual motor is part of the gas pedal part. They are connected by a drive cable. Some dealers replace both assemblies to avoid a come back on the repair.

Now as to the problem after the fix, it is not normal. After the repair (and the pedals being synchronized) they move smoothly all the way up and all the way down, no jumping.
I think they may not have the gas and brake sync'd up.

There is a procedure in the service manual, but it boils down to moving the gas pedal all the way down with the motor and making sure the brake pedal moves all the way down as well. If the brake bottoms out too soon it will torque back up as the gas pedal bottoms out. What I would do before installing the new part in the car is manually turn the drive cable input on the new brake pedal all the way down and then move it a few turns off the stop. Then run the gas pedal down all the way with the motor. Connect the drive cable and see if they run smooth.

Hope this helps.

vegasmarauder- The plastic gear you speak of on the brake pedal, is that available separately, or is it part of the brake pedal assm? Part number? I'm going to have to dig into one to do the repair, was wondering what I'm getting into....

Here is what you asked for:
Brake pedal assy: 3W1Z-2455-BA
Accelerator pedal: 3W7Z-9725-AA

Awe crap. You just described the exact problem I'm having too. The switch just barly makes the pedals move then they jam. When I mean move I mean like 1/4" if that.

Whats the cost on these parts?

I might be in the same boat, how much travel are the pedals supposed to have?

What's the replacement procedure, and the adjustment procedure? Cost would be nice too!
