View Full Version : CV is louder inside than outside!
OK. I drive a lightly modified CV LX Sport, and I am disappointed to report that the rather mild 14" Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers are now louder (and more resonant) inside than outside(!).
I had a co-worker drive my car around the parking lot today, and the exterior exhaust note is considerably more mild than it sounds/feels inside the cabin.
The question: Would 18" Magnaflows sound a little peppier on the exterior yet not louder inside the cabin??

It depends on the overall system, not just the mufflers, on whether you get interior resonance. I have used the exact same mufflers on different cars and got totally different results inside the cabin. Yeah I hate exhaust systems that are louder inside than out (flowmasters were always this way especially).
Dynomax super turbos have a bad rep for droning though, in general. I had a pair of 2.5" offset in/out on a 73 Dodge Charger w/ a 383 and it was like you said, loud in the cabin, not that loud outside the car. It was deafening w/ 3.91s and a 3 spd auto on the highway.

I get drone on my magnaflows, and its just as loud outside as it feels on the inside

Yeah see, I had 14" magnaflow 4x9 case offset/center mufflers on a 350 chevy Nova, big cam, 4 spd manual, dual 2.25" exhaust w/ headers, and it was so quiet inside the car you couldn't tell it was running. It had a noticeable tone outside the car but was still very quiet

Also where the exhaust exhausts plays a big part. If it exits or dumps under the car it's going to be loud, if you have exhaust tips make sure the exit pass the bumper. I have my Meg's tips out by about 1.5" past the edge of the bumper. I still get drone but its not headache causing kind expect for one little sweet spot.

I failed to point out that the interior sound changed only when I added some MM tips a couple of weeks ago---they are the OEM resonated variety. They were installed after the factory rear resonators (on my CV tailpipe assemblies) were cut off, so the tone and vibration seem to have everything to do with the new tips. :o
The new tips look pretty cool...and the exhaust note on the exterior is slightly deeper/louder than before. It's just too bad that I have a noticeably worse cabin sound. I've got some Ford exhaust dampers on order, in hopes that adding them to the system will smooth things out.

Did you add the MM tips to your tiny tiny CV rear tail pipes (what are those things, like 1 7/8" pipe, or did you use larger 2.25" MM tails?

The shop cut off the CV tails just upstream of the factory resonators, then added 2.25" straight pipe (with a few modest bends) to meet the MM tips.

My 18" Magnaflows are damn near silent in the car until about 1/2 throttle. After that its louder than stock and sounds great inside and outside the car. The interior noise is no louder than stock at cruise or light throttle, but I still have the factory tailpipes. If you want a little more noise then go with the 14" Mags, I may be switching soon. BTW, no drone whatsoever with the 18".

They should sit out like this to help get the exhaust exiting outside of the under body.

I like mine to sound THUNDEROUS when I pass other motorist. It may sound stupid to them. But I don't care!
